A subway is essential to the progression of Calgary's transit network because the capacity is needed, not because of train vs car collisions.

Who told you that?

The 8th ave Subway is happening, it's just a matter of when/budget.

Part of it is that we're in a city with over a million people and a roadway system built for half that. The other problem is that people are idiots.

This action was preventable, while I'm sorry for the victims injuries especially the passenger who is going to be devestated, there's no one to blame but the driver has to ask him or herself, was saving maybe a minute to get to the destination worth the price that you're paying now and that the drivers of the bus and other witensses and especially the passenger are probably paying tonight and for a long time.
Completely inappropriate to be jumping on the soapbox right now.

Lets just hope that the passengers injuries aren't severe.

I think an instance of bad driving is the perfect time to talk about bad driving.

And yet, somehow buildings downtown have underground parkades.

And yet, somehow when a new skyscraper is being started in Calgary, the giant hole they dig in the ground isn't flooded.

And yet, somehow London built a subway.

It makes me uncomfortable that there's a woman's life in question, and it seems like an appropriate time to act like a self righteous dink.

8 Ave subway talk that wasn't started by SebC. How often does that happen?

She's in serious but stable condition. Generally means a person will recover, life is not in question.

The only thing I've ever read about building subways in Calgary is that it's more expensive because the soil quality is poor and so everything needs extra shoring up. But since I wasn't able to find anything else out about it (googlefu is not good), I took that with a grain of salt. A large one.

I've quit smoking but work just beside this intersection. Still go outside time to time to pjff my electronic cigarette. My entertainement is watching people run this light every freakin time! It's a money machine. Never want to see anyone hurt, but that intersection is a train drivers worst nightmare. Everyone is hellbent to get onto fifth then north or memorial.

8th Avenue Subway won't eliminate train traffic on 7th Avenue.

In fact, current plans have 2 subways being built and still keeping 7th Avenue in use for the blue line.

Update?

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgar...ain-crash.html

Police say the vehicle ran a red light on McLeod Trail and was struck on the passenger side by the train.

The man driving suffered minor injuries and the woman was transported to hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

Well I'm pretty sure several European cities have subways that run underneath rivers so I don't see how it could be an unsolvable problem. Prague's subway runs underneath the river.

I don't know about the impossible part. But I've noticed that when they dig the foundations for the larger buildings, there is a tremendous amount of water that they have to pump out.
