Yeah and if the timeline line of the reporter/photographer and others on Twitter is accurate; looks like it took the better part of an hour to get passenger extracted.

Horrible.

MOD edit: A bit much.

Edit: Sorry everyone, it was a bit excessive

Yes, the passenger took the brunt of it. Very sad. Thoughts and prayers.

Fixed your post.
I know everyone who posts on CP is perfect, but in the real world everybody occasionally makes mistakes. Sometimes with big consequences.

It doesn't take a stupid person to accidentally run a red light, in fact I'd be surprised at any person who have driven 15-20 years or more and never once done so.

Yes, indeed it is horrible. I hope she/he is ok but I imagine it is going to be a bad scene.

At the end of the day, it just seems like Calgarians are getting to be worse and worse drivers.

Between the people that drive around in the winter with the wrong tires speeding down the deer foot doing last minute three lane changes , to people running red lights, to people just not paying attention and believing that their cars are armored like tanks its getting worse.

Part of it is that we're in a city with over a million people and a roadway system built for half that. The other problem is that people are idiots.

This action was preventable, while I'm sorry for the victims injuries especially the passenger who is going to be devestated, there's no one to blame but the driver has to ask him or herself, was saving maybe a minute to get to the destination worth the price that you're paying now and that the drivers of the bus and other witensses and especially the passenger are probably paying tonight and for a long time.

The amount of people who get their drivers license by having the instructor "help them" in this city and province is staggering. All anecdotal evidence of course but it's shocking.

As I understand it from comments on Twitter; original collision was at 7th and MacLeod, but came to stop closer to 3rd Street.

It can't have gone that far. When they did the overhead shot of the scene, on Global, you could see the skating rink at the plaza, pretty clearly. 3rd is all the way down at TD Square, is it not?

*think I might have the map backward in my head*

Incorrect. Came to a stop between Macleod and 1st Street SE.

And not to be 'that guy', but 7th and Macleod at rush hour is a dangerous street. Especially with the backups at 6th and 5th. This could have happened to anyone.

The red light camera flashed and the SUV hit a CTrain. We're talking a second or two between an accident and a close call.

Cps says driver ran red light going north. Westbound train hit vehicle, dragged it and then eastbound train hit it.

Spoke to one guy who was on scene right off the bat. He says he tried to use fire extinguisher on vehicle. #yyc @CTVCalgary

Cps says driver not hurt. Woman in serious/stable condition. She's in hospital. Took fire crews almost 1 hr to extricate her. @CTVCalgary

This accident is a tragedy for those involved, and I hope that everyone is ok, but that being said, I hardly think that this accident justifies spending millions or billions of dollars to put the 7th ave line underground.

Driving is dangerous and serious business, if you don't pay attention then you or your passengers or an innocent person will get hurt or killed. Running red lights is a huge risk, we all have someplace to go and we want to get there as soon as possible, but the consequences are serious.

If we need to put this line underground to reduce fatalities, then should we reduce the speed limit on deerfoot to 10kph? Should we be funding a program to put hundreds of pillows in everyone's car? If you can drive, you need to learn to pay attention and drive prudently. And yes, sometimes when you are driving you get lucky and avoid an accident because someone else was paying attention when you were not.

I seriously doubt that would be effective/matter to her at this point, assuming the passenger is a family member/friend.

Unless the point is to make sure that she's punished for the benifit of angry people reading of the accident.

Yeah, and how many times when there is a drunk driver, it's the selfish ####### that got behind the wheel after having a drink that walks away unscathed.

Nowhere close to natural selection when it comes to vehicles...
