And these cars are so ridiculously powerful, and fast revving, you are taking a massive performance penalty now by selecting a manual if it has a SMG/DSG. With the exception of professional drivers, the Automatic cars will destroy their manual counterparts. And even then, they are still quicker.

Yeah, I get the argument manuals in big cars don't seem as appealing. But to me, anything that is remotely sporty, I can't help but think would be better with a stick. To me, it always comes down to making a car more fun.
Btw....I'm ok with people saying they want a DSG, or not wanting to mess with manuals. I can even accept people liking them because they are clearly future tech. But I always roll my eyes when people bust out the performance reason. Everybody always seems to think they will be racing Sebastian Vettel at every corner. Show me a guy who tracks their M6 Grand Coupe, and I'll show you the tooth fairy. Yeah, the DSG etc. are faster in every mathematical way, but unless you're on the track, but when's the last time it matter one iota to 99% in reality? Do you really need that extra .2 seconds to 60 on Crowchild? You'll destroy somebody at a light by 1/32nd of a second, only to have to break in 3 seconds again?
You'll never be in a situation to fulfill the potential of these cars. Meanwhile the guy caning his base manual Mazda2 to 95% of it's ability is having the time of his life.

I currently own a 1984 911 Targa, previously owned a 1995 C2 Cabriolet (993) and a 1990 C4 Targa (964). I have owned a myriad of other "sports car's" but have always come back to the 911. I have also owned a 1989 944 Turbo and 1973 914 2.0L which I too enjoyed.

Throw a 993 Targa and perhaps a 928 for the wife, onto that list and you are living my dream life, my friend.

The 993 is a great, great car, I miss mine often (Guards Red On Cashmere). I would still love a twinner or C2S. They are comfortable, somewhat refined compared to 911's of yore but still exhibit all the goodness of air cooled 911's. The sound, the smell, all pure goodness !!
The 928 is another wonderful car, albeit a little tougher to maintain ($$$). For me it would be a 1992-1995 GTS or a 1990-91 GT.

Haha, while thank you for linking me to one of the best restorers on the planet, and the company that sells ridiculously low-mileage Porsches... both are a little out of my league at this juncture sadly.
But yeah, a nice 993 is still on my list. The first Porsche I ever drove was actually a 993 cab....and it was a hell of a good time. I'm not really "convertible guy" though, so I'd prefer the coupe. Coupes just look nicer to me anyway.

^^^^ 993's are without a doubt, one of the sexiest cars ever built. The body lines on them make them look like they were carved out of a single piece of stone. To me, the most beautiful Porsche ever built was the 993 Turbo. When you see this car pass you one the highway, it you just can't help but notice the almost comically wide stance of the car. A clean 993 Turbo will go for bigger dough than a clean 996 Turbo from what I have heard. The car is that iconic now. 1 weekend car for the rest of my life?.... Black 993 Turbo coupe.

The 993's as a whole have held their value extremely well comparative to the 996 that replaced it. The 996 was "mass" produced in Porsche terms and felt mass produced and somewhat cheap (particularly the interior). The 996/993 comparo is much like the 360/355 comparo. Ferrari built a ton of 360's compared to the 355 but lacked that certain character that the 355 had in droves, the 993 is the same compared to the 996.
993 Turbo's still command over $85K+ for real good examples (that is 997 Turbo territory). Sure cheaper ones can be had but there are not many around nor for sale. The 996 Turbo is one of the best bang for the buck used car's on the planet, heck you can find them under $30K south of the border. Perfect daily driver for Calgary (or fun summer toy) and they have proven to be extremely reliable not suffering the IMS problems inherent to the other M96 powered 996's due to it's GT1 derived engine.

I'm not arguing with the logic, I just never see Chevy doing it. The purists would be in an outrage that you dropped the V8, and the target market would probably scoff because its domestic.

The 12C is quadruple+ the price of the Corvette so not really fair to compare that way. The Corvette is still affordable in real world terms and the LS is an excellent engine. I expect the C7 to be a mind blowing performer and the looks are growing on me. I am sure it will look better in the flesh, particularly in darker colours. I am not a big Corvette fan (sans the 53' - 67' cars that had so much style and character, I would love a 1967 427/4 Speed but they command ridiculous money now) but appreciate the performance "bargain" it truly is compared to the competition.

Not wrong at all. Ferdinand Porsche (not Ferdinand "Ferry" Porsche who was his eldest son and the one who designed the 356 and the true bearer of the Porsche Marquee) designed the Beetle which utilized the same air cooled, rear engine, RWD layout as the 356 and 911. The family lineage is there but the 356 and subsequent 911 were all homegrown Porsche sharing little else other than design layout with the Beetle. Porsche built sports car's, VW built people movers. The family tree continues to this day as Porsche is now under the VW umbrella.

Which is why I tried to bring it back by making reference to the styling, which has gone pure supercar. Curious to see what they'll do with the higher performance models.

How come this thread is full of talk and photos of those nasty porsches?
Big Corvette fan here, hard to find a better driving car close to the price.
C5's are a treat to drive, moreso than the C6 in my opinion. Last year of the flip up headlights!

Volkswagon also built a sports car although I thought they were a little useless because they used the same mechanics as the Beetle. My first real job as a 16 year old was as a weekend and summer car jockey for the first VW dealership in Vancouver. Here's the Karman Ghia.
Who wouldn't want to own a Corvette Stingray. They're a little gaudy by my standards but still they're the dream of little kids and most big kids too.
