Fantastic backhand goal - he sure loves to score those. The two assists were great too. One thing that's evident is that Gaudreau has amazing hockey IQ ... the idea of one day having him on a line with Baertschi makes my mouth water. So much hockey sense there. Put a big center between them and you have a really skilled line.

That being said, I'm also happy for Bill Arnold. That was a nice assist on the first goal, and scored one himself as well.

Oil Kings vs Saskatoon tonight here in Saskatoon and I can't go. Not liking this at all, would have been awesome to see Brossoit face off against Ferland.

Gillies stopped 44 shots for the shutout. Jankowski was held pointless, as was Gaudreau in his game.

Providence defeated UMass 2-0. Sounds like Gillies was outstanding in getting the shutout. No points for Janko.

BC lost to New Hampshire 2-1. They got into penalty trouble in the second. No points for Gaudreau or Arnold.

MSU is up 3-1 on Notre Dame midway through the third. DeBlouw has an assist.

Brossoit stopped 34 of 35 shots tonight and was named 1st star. He has been lights out since returning from the WJC camp.

Gillies so far: 17 GP, 9-6-2, 1.95 GAA, .931 % svs, 3 SO ... that's some crazy stats for a rookie goaltender in the NCAA!

Coda Gordon had two assists tonight ... close to a point per game now (14+30 in 46 games).

Laurent Brossoit has a shutout going with 4 minutes left vs. Medicine Hat. I hope I just didn't jinx his shutout...1:43 left now...less than a minute, and... GAME!...I didn't jinx the the shutout- 3-0 for Brossoit over the Tigers.

Those are just stupid good numbers.

What are the chances of seeing him in at least a backup position with the Heat next season? Maybe Brust or Taylor as the starter with Brossoit as the backup.

Let Ortio stay in Finland and keep being a top 3 goalie in that league.

Goalies are similar to pitchers in baseball; I don't think you can have enough of them. They are so unpredictable.

Unfortunately, where do they all play?

Does Ramo come here next year? Does Ortio get enough work in Europe?
Where ever any of them are though-Brossoit, Ramo, Ortio, Gillies- they have to play (Shouldn't be a problem for Gillies.).

I'd like to see Ortio and Brossoit in the AHL and Ramo, especially the way Irving's been playing, backing up Kipper next year. But the NHL (Flames) jobs could be interesting with Kipper going into the final year of his contract.

Ortio and Brossoit may be too young (inexperienced) to carry the load at an AHL level, but I'd really hate to see either one sit too often next year, so it may make sense for Ortio to spend another year in Finland.

It will be really interesting to see how the Flames/Heat goaltending situation looks next year.

Surprised this went unmentioned - Wisconsin won a pair of overtime games on Friday and Saturday. In both, John Ramage played the overtime hero. He's up to four goals on the season now.

Karlsson and Irving are cut loose

I really liked Irving in the NHL last year, but this year, he hasn't been able to play ahead of two career AHLers in Abbotsford ... not very promising. Ramo has been excellent in the KHL for years, he deserves another shot in the NHL:

I think that certainly be the case. Feaster is trying to cut as many connections with Sutter as possible.

The way Irving has gone this year, the goaltender dilemma has sort of worked itself out. Before, Irving was playing third string to Kiprusoff and Ramo, with many more goalies coming up the pipeline from draft picks. Unless something major turns around for him, there's no way I see him back (that is to say, if he doesn't reestablish himself again as a possible NHL backup).

If he fails to, I see the above happening.

If not, it becomes a more difficult question (though a good problem to have): what do you do with three NHL calibre goalies? You could always trade Kiprusoff for his remaining value and hope Ramo is a legitimate starter in this league. Irving will want an NHL spot, so either him or Kiprusoff I think will go. In that case, it might be better to attempt to run a two young goalie system and let them both develop a bit in a 1A/1B tandem (Ramo, in this scenario, would be 27 and a starter and Irving, 25).

I think you have the AHL correct either way. It may be that Brossoit will return to the Oil Kings for an overager year though. That would simplify things to Brust/Taylor and Ortio.

I'd say its too early to say Irving will be cut, especially based on one poor half season in the AHL where he didn't get much of an opportunity. He has proved more in the NHL than Karlsson has. I'm still thinking Irving will be the Flames backup this season.

We gave up a 2nd round pick for Ramo, so he definitely will get a shot. Mostly likely next year when his KHL contract ends.

Who goes then? There is Kiprusoff, Ramo, and Irving. I don't see Ramo coming over, just to be thrown to the AHL. Kiprusoff could be bought out, traded, or retire.

Either way, what you suggest has 3 players in the NHL. Who's the odd man out and what happens to him?

I don't know why everyone is writing off Irving. Last year he finally showed some major improvement and he could very well be backing up Kipper this year. The reason he hasn't been playing in the AHL is because he is on a try out contract where he is only allowed to be dressed for a certain amount of games.

On Brossoit:

This should be his last season in the WHL. If he returns next season, he'll be an overager. We don't want that.

Additionally, he should (has to) be the starting goalie with the Heat next year. No slowing things down like we did with Irving.

As much as I like Brust and Taylor, they don't have a future with the Flames. Pick one of them to back up and give 2/3 of all games to Brossoit.
