Another thing that was bothering me watching TSN's coverage this afternoon, was how much of an asskiss Dreger was on live TV. He was putting down Burke's work and saying basically how good of a signing Nonis was. It was almost like he was pushing to a) get on Nonis' good side, and b) suck up to Rogers/Bell so that he wouldn't lose his job if he talked out of line. What a buttkiss job that was.

IIRC Nonis and Dreger are cousins so need to get on his good side.

Was Yelle, Kobasew and Leopold for Thornton. Bruins took the SJ offer when Sutter didn't sub Regehr for Leopold.

Gardiner will be a good player but if that is what is holding TO back from acquiring a top 10 goalie and getting into the playoffs, then Burke deserved to be fired for not improving his team's weakest position.

I don't know about that. Lou is already 33 so you maybe get 3 good years out of him before he is on the decline and you are still stuck with him for 5.3 mill till when ever he retires. He could already be on the decline since he clearly isn't better than Schneider and has PROVEN he cant handle the pressure of play offs.
He is a good goalie but he is to much of an albatross and to old imo for TO to trade up more of their future. If TO were a few pieces away from being a contender it might make sense (although again he cracks under pressure so maybe not even then). They aren't struggling for revenue they more than anyone can afford to to grow their prospects, their fans will still support them. I don't think they need to be in playoffs or bust mode. This trade if it goes down could turn out to be another failure like Seguin and Hamilton for Kessel. Vancouver is asking for too much imo.

Clearly isn't better than Schneider? Based on what some less than 60 games as a back-up and a questionable couple of games in the play-offs?
As for not being able to handle the pressure of the play-offs there are what 2 goalies over the past 5 years that have more wins play-off wins that he does and he had two shutouts in the finals.

Yep, TSN went into complete overload mode on this.

I find it hard to believe that, if true, Sutter doesn't make the deal.
I know hindsight is 20/20, but still...

Valid points but consider
Thomas won the cup in his late thirties so Leafs may get more than 3 good seasons
Money not an issue for Rogers/Bell if buyout necessary
0 playoff appearances since last lockout puts urgency to show fans something. Might entice more free agents to come to TO with Luongo in net vs Reimer
If deal is Gardiner and Kadri, jury very much out on Kadri as to whether he will be a regular top six NHLer

Seriously? People still can't see the $6.5mil/per pylon married to Cuthbert? hahaha
I'd be more upset if Phaneuf didn't turn out to be a dud. Like serious Oiler number in leafland there. GAA 30,25,30 in the league the past 3 years.

Based on the media coverage of the Burke firing, I am beginning to think Burke was fired to drum up TV coverage for Bell/Rogers

Giving up Gardiner just doesn't seem like a good idea to me for the Leafs. If I were them I would try to work around Kadri and picks or Bozak. I don't think replacing young prospects is easy and they are shooting themselves in the foot if they continue to sell off their future.

The problem is if I were the Canucks I would have no desire whatsoever for Bozak. Kadri and picks, or Colborne+, sure.

Interview with Burke by Damien Cox:
http://www.thestar.com/sports/leafs/...nned-by-firing
Quote:
As soon as he learned he had been relieved of his duties as general manager of hockey’s most scrutinized team, he bolted from the Air Canada Centre to pick up his two youngest daughters, aged 7 and 8, at school.
“I called the older kids on the way, but I wanted the little ones to hear it from me first,” Burke told the Star today in an exclusive interview.
“They were okay. They just wanted to know if we’d have to move again. I said no.”
|
Quote:
“I was floored, and I still am stunned. I’ve never been fired before,” he said about Wednesday’s announcement. “How am I doing? I’m doing okay.
“I’m so grateful I had a chance to run the crown jewel franchise of the NHL. I’m grateful to have been given the chance to live in Toronto. I love this city and I am grateful for the support of the fans.”
|
Quote:
Otherwise, he’s still digesting his dismissal, still at a loss to explain why he isn’t running the Leafs anymore. Burke is under contract to the Leafs for the rest of this season and next, and he fully intends to help his former assistant, Dave Nonis, as a consultant, a job he suggested to chairman Larry Tanenbaum and Anselmi when they relieved him of his GM duties.
“I think I can help,” he said. “I’ve been at this for a while. I have my name on the Stanley Cup. I’ll do whatever I can.”

Pretty lame interview. No news on why he was actually fired. Who cares if he went to a movie alone, Cox?!

Hopefully he will expand on his movie review of Jack Reacher. I need to know more than 'It's great'.

Maybe instead the "Dirty Burger" since there's a resemblance between Nonis and Randy, co-owner of the Dirty Burger, from the Trailer Park Boys.
I think Reg had a good photoshop of Randy/Nonis back in the day.

There were also some good ones comparing him to the Hamburglar. Which ironically Randy was often called on TPB. It's all connected!
