Since it talks about his stepfather, and it was his paternal grandparents who kidnapped him, you have to assume there was estrangement between the kid's parents that led to it.
The circumstances of the abduction aren't all that surprising, but the fact that they were able to avoid being found out for 20 years is.

The fact that they searched for him using is SIN number only just last year doesn't make the length of his disappearance surprising at all.
How can they not have thought of that before? Must've been one of those "Hey, what if we look using his SIN... no, no, somebody would have done that already." moments.

Well, he turned out to be okay. Sounds like the grandparents did a good job of raising him and they were worried about child custody issues after his real parents divorced.
Maybe he would have had a worse childhood in a broken family than with his grandparents?
It's all hindsight but ultimately, this is one news story that seems to have a happy ending at least.

Because the grandparents were probably smart and didn't let him use or register his social security number in that state until he was an adult and starting working.

Especially seeing as how it appears to have been as simple as running his SSN through a database.
They're not kidding, that is Springfield PD quality right there.

I'm not aware of how social security numbers work in the U.S.
I know that I never used my SIN until I started using working around the age of 16.
The police had stopped looking him by then.

Even then, if they'd given the SSN to the police at the beginning, he woulda been found when he registered that SSN. Not when he's 25

Next question, do these Grandparents get jail time? Regardless of motive, the kidnaped the boy from his parents.
Do they lock them up, or based on the situation let it slide? I have no idea what law enforcement would do.
As a parent, if my parents took my son and I lost out on seeing him grow up, I would want them prosecuted. Even if they raised him right.
Tough case either way though.
