This approach I can agree with.

The "we took their land" I can't.

Especially when you consider that not a single Canadian alive today took any land at all.

If any of us acquired land, it was bought and paid for. We never stole 'anything.'

The land was leased not bought, and that your grandfather leased it does not diminish your obligation to the lease, my father has a 66 year lease on his apartment in London, when he dies I will inherit what ever is left of it, I cant just decide to keep the house when that lease expires, I have to go to the land owner and negotiate an extension or purchase of the lease.

I agree that because the contracts are in place we need to figure out how best to deal with them. Obviously because they were signed over a 100 years ago, something needs to be changed.

But I'll be damned if I'm 'guilted' into paying millions more to a bunch of corrupt #######s who take advantage of their own people to fill their own pockets because Canada stole their land.

I never stole anything, and I never signed any contract.

My reasons for wanting to help them has to do with the belief that we should help the poor move up the status ladder and get them to be taxpaying citizens who can support their families.

What land are you talking about? Land purchases work much differently in Canada than they typically do in the UK. I've never heard of someone acquiring a 99 year lease or the like in Calgary, at least not for residential land.

The land my family owned was given to them by the government in exchange for settling there and developing their farm.

We took their land, but more importantly we destroyed the way they live and set up a reserve system so crappy that it has systematically destroyed the chance most natives have to be a productive part of society.

People all over like to rag on natives for being unproductive, useless, or whatever, but the reality is we created the system that made them like that, so we need to fix it.

All of the treaties we signed are a form of lease, they differ from the UK in that they are indefinate, but they all obligate us to pay for the privelidge of the use of those lands.

Cardston is on leased land, ironically enough, from the reserve.

I remember it was set to expire a while back and it caused a bit of conflict in town between the natives and town.

Like I've mentioned before in this thread, that is as much on the dept. of indian affairs as it is on Spence and the band. He is paid by the band but mutually agreed upon.

Just out of curiosity how long ago would you say that Spence ought to have been chastised? Most of the audit period she wasn't even the Chief.

This whole situation is a complete mess at this point, with a lot of half-truths and misinformation from both sides.
