If what is rumoured is true, then Luongo should be a Leaf within a few days. I have a feeling the Leafs are going to get the short end of the stick if they want him that badly.

Just a hunch.
Leafs approach Laurence Gilman for new GM.
Mark Spector Sports @SportsnetSpec
Sounds like Burke did NOT want to make Luongo deal, while many in Leafs org did. Burke a principled man.

Ya, I meant to flip #1 for #2 both objectively and as a Flames fan.
The Kessel debacle is monumental and in no way would I argue all the better trades Burke made offset that one.
His work in Toronto aside, he did build a strong team in Vancouver before Gelinas and the Flames got him fired. I want to say he did the same in Anaheim, but am I giving Burke credit for something his predecessor did?

I think that's a pretty good hunch, especially in light of the complexity of the new cba.

That was my initial feeling on hearing the deal. Ownership likely wants Luongo, Burke likely didn't. Ownership gets what ownership wants. Makes less sense the other way around.

He is quite possibly the best business mind in the NHL.

Wow. So Burke didn't want to make a trade that most competent GM's wouldn't make and gets fired. This IMO is bad news and adds more drama to the Luongo and more baggage for him to carry around as a Leaf. What a horrible run organization.

Oh man does that remind me of when the Flames hired Pause Button. "He's the best talent evaluator in the NHL!"

I think the Leafs have made a mistake here. They're taking on one of the longest contracts in the league, and I really don't think Luongo will do that great behind that defence.
Add to that, they must be giving up a king's ransom now. Gillis knows the Leafs can't turn back, and now could be asking for even more.
Certainly Kadri's gone, but how extreme could it go?
Rielly?

If and when Burke gets hired somewhere else, it will have to be somewhere where he is totally in charge and have an ownership group that would be willing to have him in the spotlight and accept whatever comes out of his mouth. Therefore, I can't see him coming here if the Flames ever wanted to make a change.
Brian should take a couple years off from managing.

Proof is in the pudding with Burke. He's been nothing short of terrible during his tenure as GM. I really don't get the statement that he's the best hockey mind out there. If he was the Leafs would be making the post season not become worse than under JFJ.

Say what you will about the Canucks...The way Gilman has skirted the cap for that team is nothing short of amazing.

It does make some sense but it's not like Burke didn't ever want Luongo. Burke was trying to get Lou all summer. Maybe the price is to high for Burke's liking but is it worth losing your job for if you get the player you want and ownership wants?
Still think there is an issue behind the scene's that is not hockey related.

No kidding. Talk about gaining leverage - Gillis has the Leafs conglomerate by the short and curlys.

nothing will ever cover up the fact that Burke traded those first round picks. That was a moronic trade.
