Not Flames prospect news, but Martin Gelinas' son, Matthew, was signed by the WHL's Tri-City Americans yesterday. Happy for the family.

Wow...a TSN panelist (Bob McKenzie) actually complimented the Flames prospect pool. After mentioning that Bob Hartley won't be afraid to use his his veterans, he went on to say, "...That's not to say that the Flames future is going up in smoke. The prospect's cupboard, slowly but surely, is being restocked with not quite ready yet talent such as Johnny Gaudreau, Tyler Wotherspoon, Patrick Sieloff, Marcus Granlund, and Mark Jankowski. But the crown jewel of the franchise...Sven Bartschi...)"
He said, "The Flames are doing a good job of restocking the cupboard."

He's not wrong. One more good draft and the Flames should be in good shape in the next 5 years.

Its a huge shock that TSN actually acknowledged the existence of the Flames without writing them off for the next decade.

the bigger shock is that Flames fans are acknowledging something positive was said by TSN. Even during the WJC the inferiority complex kept so many from hearing anything good said about Gaudreau and that he was Flames property

Brossoit lost 2-1 to Kootenay, but stopped 30 of 32 shots and was named 2nd star.

Wotherspoon picks up an assist and then scores another... he's playing with confidence.

Wortherspoon ends game 2G, 2A, +4.
Big night for him.
I didn't get to check tonight. Was he paired with Troy Rutkowski? They both put up huge nights.

I was just looking at the prospects who will need to be signed this summer. We have Ramage from 2010 and Granlund, Wotherspoon, and Brossoit from 2011. I expect all will be offered contracts.
Other possibilities are of course Gaudreau and Bill Arnold. Have I missed anyone?
I'm wondering how Ryan Culkin's late 93 birthday affects his turning pro status. I expect we'll keep his rights if he plays a year of overage junior hockey.
We currently have 47 players on our reserve list and we'll probably cut 5 or 6 loose as their contracts run out so we should have lots of room to sign our prospects.

Looks like you covered everyone there. I don't think Culkin's birth date is the defining factor, I think the deadline is two years after they were drafted for non college players.
Of the 47 contracts you stated we currently have, 23 of them expire at the end of the season. You bet there will plenty of room for Flames management to sign any of the prospects you mentioned.

^After Weisbrod's comments, I think the Flames may give John Ramage the Joey Leach treatment.

Granlund has another year left on his contract with HIFK Helsinki, I believe.

My understanding is Matthew is a huge Flames fan and even posts on CP.

Yeah, kind of surprised me.....but then again so did the Joey Leach situation.
In these cases I have no problem deferring to the experts. Would suck though, considering that Ramage seemed like he might be a diamond in the rough there, captaining the US World Junior team and all.

I believe that Nick Larson, drafted in the 4th round in 2008, and currently in his senior year at Notre Dame, is Flames property until August 15. I doubt he'll be signed.
The Flames also have until August 15 to make a decision on Ramage.
Brossoit, Wotherspoon, and Granlund have to be signed by June 1, or they'll re-enter the draft.
Gaudreau and Arnold are both safe until they leave college.
All of the kids drafted last year are protected until at least June 1, 2014, and the college guys for four years.

Interesting but I think a Flames contract would overtake any S&M liiga contracts. Another aspect is I think I read that they were going to increase the year(s) for Euro prospects to be signed in this new contract. Not sure this would apply to Granlund though.
I know at one time the NHL was trying to change the entry level contracts. Something like to 2 years with an option for 2 more years. Does anyone know if there were any changes?
