Default Ces 2013

I was too busy today to hop on CP - there was no thread about CES?!

Such neat stuff on display (the shield looks most interesting to me):

http://www.engadget.com/2013/01/07/s...unch-ces-2013/

Sony announces the world's first 4K OLED TV at CES

http://www.theverge.com/2013/1/7/384...d-tv-announced

Back in November, Samsung announced that it'd show off its first 4K TV at CES. Well, the company has followed through on its promise today — the 85-inch UN85S9 is the world's largest Ultra High-Definition TV, and has some pretty unprecedented industrial design. The huge screen is suspended within a metal frame reminiscent of an easel — it can be tilted up and down — and, while we're not sure how many living rooms the colossal contraption will fit into, the floating effect is a sight to behold.

It's not a 17" tablet, it's a 17 pound tablet!

You absolutely have to watch the promo vid for this one, I love when the mom just comes in and scoops it up off the ground from the kids for that happening Skype call and tailpipe of a party:

Futureshop in Deerfoot Meadows has a 84" Sony Ultra HD TV on display...not OLED though. It is pretty nice but I don't have $24k to spend on anything let alone a television.

With the sizes of TV's we're hitting, I would like 2160p.

I can't wait until I see some nozzle at the zoo filming the Ostrich exhibit with one of those things.

Sounds like Qualcomm's keynote was surreal:

Worth the read.

There's a link to the keynote at the bottom of the page.

Direct link.

There's a "Smart Fork" at CES this year... it's a fork that measures how quickly you're eating and vibrates/flashes when you're eating too quickly. Which in turn is supposed to train you to eat more slowly and help you lose weight.

It's a $99 fork.

Sounds like 3D is dead and 4K is the new big thing. I'm looking forward to getting 4K, even if it is only to run through the PC for gaming. I'm guessing that mainstream 4K content is a long ways away though.

I was pretty disappointed with the Samsung reveal with all this talk about a portrait/see-through hype. The chalkboard speaker form looks kinda silly but the screen certainly is not - why not just show that?

10 terabytes to store a single normal length movie? ya the tech won't be useful anytime soon

The oculus rift looks pretty darn cool. Gotta try it in person though I'm guessing. Skip to 20:30 in the first video.

Cool, definitely something I'd want to try, any time I've tried something like that before the latency is always what kills it, but if they can have super low latency and add in spatial translation in addition to just the directional tracking, that'd be awesome.

I'd love one of these for a flight game, my big thing with flight games is being able to look around, wearing one of these being aware of your surroundings would be so much easier and immersive. Even just being able to shoulder check or lean around a corner a bit.

That 3D is dead? Or 4K content is a long ways out?

I think they discovered that 3D doesn't sell TV sets. But I'd guess most of the new higher end TV sets will still have that checkbox marked.

But as long as special glasses are required I can't see it taking off.

4K content will be a long way off too. I can't see too many creators or distributors wanting to upgrade all their equipment again.
