You should really learn the definition of fair as well, it would seem.

If you change fear to respect, than I think you are correct in teaching your children to be cautious around ANY size dog. When we are walking our dog, some children will bolt right up and start petting him, whereas others will ask for permission to approach. To me, teach your kids to ALWAYS ask for permission to approach an animal and they should be just fine. It teaches them to use caution without causing unnecessary fear.

No, because that's just as silly and counter-productive. If the mods want to lock a thread or feel that Sliver is going too far and deal with him, that's their choice, but to activly try to derail threads where discussion is going on isn't a great chioce.

As for the aggression part, they bark ferociously at anybody who comes near the house through a metal gate that they can see out of. I don't know if that's normal for a bunch of rottweilers or not, but I'm always glad to be on the other side of the fence as it seems pretty aggressive to me.
|
It's not necessarily normal for Rottweilers, in particular. Often dogs in a pack (usually characterized as more than 2) will bark at anyone who comes by. They may be warning them off - or they may be saying hello. Because these are big dogs, their bark may sound a lot worse than their bite.
To help you out, notice their tails - are they up or down? Are they wagging quickly? Are their ears up or back? Are they stretching their bodies out as if reaching for something or bundled a little more tightly? Ears up, wagging tail, bundled up a bit rather than reaching can all indicate excitment as opposed to aggression.
Having said that - they could be poorly trained, and could be showing aggression. Try to assess without judging first and it could just be a bunch of excited dogs being silly because there is a bunch of them together - kind of like teenagers. When a group of them get togther, they can be loud, even intimidating to an adult, but they are really just being goofy and having a good time.

I'm a dog lover, but all owners need to realize that their dogs are stupid a**holes and should be treated accordingly. My dog is pretty well trained (comes on command, sits, stays, doesn't bark unless she wants in etc.) but she still has her dumbass moments. The only dogs I've seen not have idiot moments are pure working dogs (ie. police dogs, herding dogs etc. with years of intricate training and jobs) and those animals are not what most people consider "pets". Think of your dog as a wolf in a state of arrested development somewhere in or around the puppy years.

I find that odd. I know plenty of people that have an irrational fear of dogs. You don't have to look that hard to find one.

I'll watch for those signs. To be honest when they bark at me I usually stare straight ahead and keep walking.

I actually do know a couple of people whose kids are scared of dogs. I don't know anyone who thinks that's healthy though, including their parents.

You may not have to look that hard but I expect most people do. I can't think of anyone I know that comes close to Slivers views or fears.

Sliver's views are on the extreme side but I share his thoughts that certain breeds should be banned.
Within any debate you have people with all sorts of viewpoints, including some that are very extreme. I'm not sure why it should be considered so surprising that someone really REALLY dislikes dogs.

Well then I think you're misrepresenting Sliver. The guy even says that he doesn't want his kids to be afraid of dogs and does things to help with his daughter's fear.
I also hope my kids don't grow up afraid of dogs. My wife has done a good job of making sure they like dogs. I won't be able to help, though. Dogs freak me the fata out, ever since I was bitten as a child. All of the inconsiderate oblivious dog owners don't help.

We should all walk around with name tags to describe our phobias to random people on the street. "Hello, my phobia is: the way eggshell foam feels"

Really? Here's a direct quote from a few pages back.
"They can do a lot of damage and a healthy dose of fear is very reasonable"
Also let's not forget the fact that he called them murderers as well. Never mind all his other over the top, uneducated rants against dogs and their owners.
Look, I have no problem that some people don't like dogs. I get it. I really do. I also know there are a-hole owners out there. The vast majority of dog owners I come across fall under the good kind and their dogs are well adjusted.
For the record, I also am not a fan of pitbulls. Something does need to be done. I just don't like lumping all big dogs together like they are all Cujo waiting to happen.

Banning breeds is a terrible idea and good to see that the city agrees.
Punish owners of all dogs with fines and mandatory training after any offenses. Don't punish breeds.

^that is so vicious! (sarcasm for those that don't get it)
I don't think breeds should be banned, but I do think more aggressive breeds should cost more to license and maybe it'll weed some of the morons out from choosing those dogs.
let's face it, these aggressive breeds probably get more by-law calls than the others so the money can be justified. Also the city could make it mandatory to check on these breeds once a year around registration time and see if they are aggressive, check their welfare and make sure they are cared for properly, etc.
