I learned to drive on a standard and have owned almost nothing else, save the odd great deal I got on this piece of #### or that until now. Bought an SUV. I'm 40 and still miss a standard often. Will take the girlfriend's standard car out now and then "just because".

Reminds me of the time when I was taking drivers lessons in HS. I had finished my lesson and the instructor said we had to pick up his next student before he dropped me off at home. The next sudent was taking lessons using a stick. Instructor said he'd give me a few quick lessons driving a stick on the way there. We get to the lights at McLeod and Heritage. Light turns green and I hit the gas and we're not moving. He reminds me to slowly release the clutch and I quickly took my foot off causing the back wheels to squeall as we entered the intersection. A cop was behind us and pulled us over. Instructor had to explain to the cop he was teaching me how to drive standard

I learnt from a big fat lady. It was near impossible to get into 5th gear with her huge thigh eating up space. The lessions were pretty easy, we would stop by her place at least 2 times a lession so she could get more food.
Thank you, Chinook Driving Academy.

I think that being able to operate a manual transmission is a skill that people should have. It's something that people should understand and be able to do, in case they have to. I can think of a couple of scenarios where a passenger might need to become the driver, where it's not the time or the place to get a crash course. For instance a medical emergency while camping. Or maybe the driver that was supposed to stay sober forgot, and now his non drinking gf needs to drive home. It's not difficult. You just need to understand how to do it, and then practice it long enough that you can do it when you have to.
That said, I got sick of driving manual a couple years ago. I did it through my 20s, and now I'm perfectly happy with my auto, and I don't care what people think. Of course, I drive a pickup. If I drove a sports car, it'd be manual without question. It's just so much fun to drop a gear, take a corner, and then f*** right off.

So a man skill, like:
ironing a shirt
shining your shoes
simple plumbing
finding the clit

Haha! Actually due to knowing how to drive manual, I got to drive a Skoda last year. It's so old that it was made in Czechoslovakia, so technically, it's from a country that "no longer exists". Cracked me up to no end.

This entire thread was just so undercover brother could find out the ages of female posters... he just needed a clever way to ask without seeming obvious but sadly, settled on the not so subtle "stick shift."
Suckers.

My first car was a standard brand new civic. I still remember the salesman teaching me in the dealer parking lot. My dad drove it out of the city for me and I learned the rest in the countryside where we lived. So glad I got the standard.
Learned on the family tractor and have owned nothing but standards ever since (with the exception of an Acura legend). Its getting tougher and tougher to find manuals (and resell them)
With electric cars and even Ferrari going with 'Automatics' (I know its a computer controlled manual), I think we have about 20 years left before all cars only...have...2...pedals

Nah, as long as it's legal to manually drive a car I think some brands will stay pure with at least a model or two. For example I can't see Subaru making an auto-only STI
