2013 NFL Offseason thread.
I know a lot of the focus and excitment is on the upcoming playoff matchups in the NFL this weekend. But for those of us who cheer for uncompetitve teams this is an exciting time of turmoil and uncertanty as we watch our beloved franchises struggle with the pursuit of hiring competent personal to run our teams.
Will Andy Reid coach the Cardinals? Will Clark Hunt fire an intellectually challenged Scott Pioli? Which teams will be accused of breaking the Rooney Rule? Will the Browns buck the trend? Did the Bears shoot themselves in the foot? How many teams will be rumoured to be interested in John Gruden and/or Bill Cowher? What is the point of the Jaguars? Find it all here!

What do you think of Reid in KC? Sounds more and more likely...can't be a step back from where we've been I suppose.

I keep hearing Reid to Arizona and Holmgren to KC to replace Pioli as GM.

Why would anyone want Holmgren as a GM after the craptastic job he did in Cleveland? Speaking of poor Cleveland, sorry to hear that you turned the joint over to Joe Banner.

Also, where are you hearing this exactly?

The Kansas City Chiefs are on the verge of a deal to make Andy Reid their next head coach, according to league sources.
There still are minor details to work out but after nine hours of meetings Wednesday, one source involved in the talks said "the major issues have been discussed and agreed upon."

Have fun with that, Chiefs fans.

We don't need your pity. CLE won more games than the Eagles.

Yeah, and then promptly fired the guy who made some of their best offseason decisions in recent memory. Banner is awful.

Well the good news is he can probably make Cassell or Quinn look decent enough to get a second or third round pick. The bad news is you won't get to much of Jamaal Charles anymore, unless the team is down by two scores in the fourth quarter, because that's the best time to run the ball in Andy Reid's offense.

Lifetime In Suspension
|
In what looks to be an underwhelming QB class and the chiefs needing to take a QB with the first pick Reid would be a fantastic hire. If anyone now is a real QB guru or whatever term you want to use now it's Reid. As much as Philly fans turned on him over time look at the success Reid had, making the playoffs in 9 of 14 years and his success with quarterbacks show he would definitely be a good hire. He's still a great coach who had just reached his shelf life in Philadelphia. As a bronco fan I wouldn't be happy if Reid went to KC.

Yeah, IIRC McNabb was a controversial pick at the time. But Reid made it work quite well. That duo would have been criticized a lot less in a market like Kansas City than they were in Philly. So long as Reid can figure out his staff, and get Pioli out of town, I like the move, especially since the team needs a coach who can foster a QB. The only coaches who had any success in my lifetime in KC were Vermeil and Schottenheimer, who were both established coaches with extensive previous experience. So of all the guys out there, Reid is one of the few who has that. Beggars can't be chosers.

I've always said he's a great coach, but awful at managing the game. I think his early success also had a lot to do with Jim Johnson and the defenses the Eagles had. Especially prior to 2004, the Eagles were built to win the turnover and field-position battles, which made life easier on the underskilled offense.
The other problem with Reid is that he's fiercely stubborn and just refuses to make in-game or in-season adjustments. You could see over the last 2-3 years that teams were ready for a lot of the Eagles' gameplans, and he never adapted or evolved.
EDIT: That being said, if I'm a Chiefs fans and it looks like my team is going to draft someone with a lot of raw athleticism but also several question marks (i.e. Geno Smith), then Reid is probably the right guy to try and mold him.

Also, is it me or have there been a lot of terrible QB classes lately?

I'm hoping for the worst for San Diego, I want Rivers to continue his downward spiral as an average QB. They do have a pretty decent team, so almost anyone will be able to do more with them than Turner ever did

A.J.Smith let the talent on that team deteriorate. He let a lot of good players walk, and didn't seem to have a way to replace them. For example, they let Michael Turner, Ladanian Tomlinson, and Darren Sproles pretty much leave in successive seasons, and he trades up after the last one left for Ryan Matthews. Than after Matthews can't do much in his first two years, he let's Mike Tolbert leave. I think Norv is a bit flimsy as a head coach, but it's tough to get offensive production when your team is bleeding talent profusely like the Chargers did. IMO after Smith fired Schottenheimer, the Chargers never really added much talent after that, and let a lot get away.
I hope they hire the soon to be departed Scott Pioli as GM. That way he'll clash with everyone, hire bad coaches, and get rid of Rivers,

2010 is looking pretty bad. Bradford is okay, but I don't see him as an elite talent. After him, I don't think there is a single starting calibre QB as the likes of Clausen, McCoy are the only other drafted QB's. The past two years have been okay though. Newton, Daulton are both established as starters, the jury is still out on Ponder, Locker, and Kapernick. Really 3-4 starting QB's per year is about what you can expect from any one draft year.

2012 brought us two legit stars and a third solid QB in Wilson as well.

Too bad Wilson is better than both of them at the moment. They can be the stars, he'll be the champion.
