Those both look like non-play-off teams (assuming our current core of forwards) and it isn't like those are the only two options.
Getting rid of your best defensman makes no sense, especially when there are a lot of other guys with much worse deals than him on the team.
When you aren't a playoff team, things like "getting rid of your best player" comments don't really mean much, especially if that player is not a young up and commer.
The Flames making themselves worse right now by trading someone like J-Bow doesn't really matter, although I agree you don't dump him, you make the move to improve the club long term either through the move directly, or indirectly by having it allow you to set up subsequent moves.

if the cap goes down that much, I'd have to say JayBow is bought out and ends up on the wings. They have cap space and always seem to make good guys look great. This team needs to rebuild and go with youth

You have to unconditionally waive Bouwmeester before buying him out. I don't think he makes it through waivers.

If you're planning on buying out a player, it would be good news if he was grabbed on waivers - you save the buyout cash

Plus you get the bonus of $125 in cash.
My point there was that he has value. You could get something for him in a trade, I'm sure of it.

I totally agree that Bouwmeester has value and I think it would be stupid to buy him out - was only commenting on the waiver point.

JayBow is good but with a $60 mil cap, I don't think many of any teams take him with his current comtract

A couple of encouraging details: #NHL has agreed to two compliance buyouts/team in 2013-14; and variance on contracts in 20% range now
2 buyouts per team?
I'd guess Stajan and Sarich

2 buyouts!
I would love it if this means no more Stajan, and the flames could get back a 2nd round pick somehow in exchanging for a team's dead weight so they can use that for their 2nd buyout .

Oh my two buyouts are a dream come true. Stajan and Wideman can be wiped off the books forever.

2 buyouts I hope one of them is Wideman. Stajan is likely the other but maybe Hudler? The Flames can set themselves up to have huge cap space after 2014 with Cammy, Kipper, Bouw all off the books

I don't think the Flames would be willing to pay millions of $$ for a 2nd-3rd round draft pick.
Hypothetically speaking, do you think Feaster could convince the owners to write a check to Seiloff for 3M? That is essentially what they'd be doing if they acquired Komisarek + 2nd Round Pick from Toronto, then bought out Komisarek's contract. They'd be saying a kid drafted in the 2nd round is worth 3M + his entry level contract, before they even know who they're getting.
Unless I am not fully understanding this, it just doesn't make sense to me.

Stajan for sure. No doubt. Cant pay a 4th liner that much money. Dont want players around who try to leverage charity golf tournaments and get caught lying about it.
Details are scant, but i wonder if teams can resign their own players they buy out? Ie, can we buy out Kipper and sign him to a new contract hat doesnt have the same cap hit?

Hudler and Wideman buyouts???
They would be paying out 10M+ to guys who have never even been in the Flames dressing room? How do you explain that?

I assume the buyouts will only work for players already signed pre CBA. Teams will not get to trade for players and amnesty them

Further to @Real_ESPNLeBrun. Buyouts still count against players' share, Players do not like that. Prefer dollars were outside system.
I don't think anyone really understands how the compliance buyouts are really going to work at all until the new CBA is signed.

Both guys are overpaid in a cap world that is reduced $10M in 1 season. Wideman is a bad contract that the flames will regret at some point. Unless he comes in and lights it up then Feaster can get a do over in the summer. Hudler is less likely but he has a long term deal. Stajan, Cammy, Bouw, kipper are all done in the summer of 2014 the flames will need relief next summer as would be better off dumping the questionable contracts with term vs the overpaid guys with a year left

Fully agree. Not to mention how many teams need 3 buy-outs to get to the cap? I doubt many. Seems this was put in place so teams don't have to buy-out there better players on a higher cap. Every team has a "Stajan" or 2.
I would say Stajan ( no-brainer) and either Sarich or Stempniak. I highly doubt they buy out Weidman or Hudler. Granted this shortened season will be more about tryouts for next year than winning the cup for some teams.

If they are going to buyout a contract they just signed I would hope it would be one of the bad ones like Wideman or Hudler.
