Got to Toys-r-us early, there was hardly anyone there, got the stuff I'd planned no problem. Drove by Memory Express but there was a lineup just to get in so didn't go, I wanted to get my kid some of that ferro-fluid stuff but it wasn't on sale so I'll just pick it up another day. Productive boxing day and didn't have to deal with any crowds.

Went to Bestbuy in Northland Mall at around 9am; wow was it empty. I mean it was busier than normal, but not by much. Outside the Geeksquad and computer department it seemed like a normal Tuesday. I was shocked. Futureshop was rather slow as well.

I remember a couple years ago and it was just packed so much you couldn't move.

My two theories:

1) There are no good deals, which there really weren't.
2) I went between the period between 6am where everyone goes to get "Doorcrashers" and 2pm where everyone is awake and wants to go shopping.

Either way, was an easy day.

While I never thought that Boxing Day deals were that great (mostly just retailers trying to get rid of older models, I think a lot of it also has to do with the fact that a lot more people are just staying home and shopping online.

I went to Crossiron mills around 1230 and it was INSANE. The highway was bumper to bumper, barely moving once I hit stoney trail. People were parked on the side of the highway. Lineups to get into most of the stores.

Had intentions of going to Visions to pick up a cheap (< $100) deck to replace my Clairon that recently crapped out.

Ended walking out with a 5.8" touchscreen dvd headunit for $178 (regular $349) + $30 for the dash kit.

Back in the day you could get some really amazing boxing day deals, albeit on old inventory they wanted out. Now they just put crap on sale for not even that good of a discount. That being said that are a few things out there that were worth getting mid day without having to fight lines. I got a designer tie for 13 bucks, some Flames merch 30% off at jersey city, and some boxers and briefs at crazy good prices at American Eagle. Nothing I had to get up at 6am for though. Those days are long gone. I remember my brother and I got 2 tower computers for an insane discount a while ago, I cant remember exactly how much but it was bananas how cheap it was.

Boxing day splurge complete. W+H from Roden Gray, Schneider from South Willard, earbuds from future shop.

Plus a 1TB external drive for 60 bucks.

I ended up hitting the Northland Mall Future Shop around 5:40 AM. I was pleasantly surprised to see the mall doors open, as it was freezing outside. Not too busy, maybe 50-75 people waiting in line. Got in and out within 15 minutes of opening. Went to Best Buy to pick up a Laptop, but the waiting line was not worth it, so I escaped with some software, a Tablet for my daughter's birthday in a couple weeks, and a pair of headphones.

I ended up at the Best Buy at 17th Ave SW. It was not busy at all. It took me maybe 15 minutes to go in, purchase my laptop, and leave. The only annoying thing was a couple of CSR's going on about the extended warranty for the whole time I was waiting to ring in my purchase.

I'm not sure why i bother getting up so early anymore. When Boxing Day flyers used to say "limited quantity of 20," they really meant it over a decade ago. I would see heated arguments, and people nearly coming to blows, to get at the last PC/laptop/etc. Now days, when they advertise "only 20 in store," you can usually find at least 100 of the item in question.

I went back at 8:00 PM to purchase a wireless mouse (as I was not impressed with the Laptop touch pad), I was amazed to still discover dozens and dozens of an item supposedly in "limited quantities." Next year, I may just stay home.

Not the least bit surprised. My guess is the traffic would consist of Airdrie residents and residents in the Country Hills area.

I used to work with a coworker that lived in Airdrie. I would commute on the odd occasion, and we would meet at the Wal-Mart. Traffic is always bottle-necked in rush hour. I was lucky enough to be going against the traffic. Airdrie is one poorly designed city.

If we head out shopping it's not until after lunch when the crowds die down. There's really very few if any actual 'door crasher' deals anymore.

Did pick up a few things:
- NHL 13 (xbox)
- Xbox controller
- a few portable hard drives
- couple of blu-rays
- Canon 50mm DSLR lens
- a few 95mb/s SD cards

Nothing mind blowing on prices, but some good deals on stuff I was planning on buying anyways. And one of my family members got a good price-protection on one of my Christmas gifts!

And half of Saskatchewan. I don't know what it is with that mall, but it seems like flatlanders just flock to it.

I count myself lucky today.

After sleeping in, until 11am (my wonderful wife let me sleep while she took care of the little guy), we finally got packed up and back home around 12:30pm.

I then decided to go "check out" some of the boxing day sales. I had been looking at a Samsung Plasma TV that was advertised in all the flyers (Leons, The Brick, Sears, Future Shop, Best Buy, Memory Express, etc, etc). Everyone had it on for the same price: $599.99. Depending on the flyer, it was anywhere from $150 to $250 off the regular price. Seemed like a good deal. I had done some Google searches on Christmas day for reviews, and didn't see anything negative or a "reg flag", in my opinion.

Anyway, after going to Sears (WTF! crazy) Memory Express (what a nut house) and then Best Buy (equally as crazy), I figured they were probably already all gone. I had go too late.

I then went to Future Shop, up in the NE (across from the hospital). They had 2 left. Boom. Paid. Stuffed it into my truck and made my way home.

Going from a 32" to this is just...WOW! Watched 'The Dark Knight Rises' on Blu-ray tonight. Looked AMAZING!

Can anyone recommend a good TV stand to keep my kid away from the TV? Our current one stands about 17" tall. Seems like most of the stands for bigger TVs (50"+) are like 22" tall.

Or, if anyone has one for sale, send me a PM.

Not an option. We're moving within the next 20 months, and the TV is in a corner. Believe me, I'd like to wall mount it.

I posted a 'WTB' thread in the Buy/Sell section.

I'm so lame, bought Goodfellas on blu-ray for $10 from Amazon and threw in one other item at full price for the free shipping.

I picked up the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II.

Vistek had it one sale, and Memory Express's price beat makes it even cheaper. Gonna have to sell the previous version, and some other gear, to pay for it, but it'll be worth it!
