Unless the Kings were willing to trade Cammy for the the 25th pick instead of the 17th Eberle wasn't available to the Flames. Ennis was still available at 25 when Sutter took Nemisz.

The two draft picks directly after Nemisz (Ennis and John Carlson) are seemingly better picks than Nemisz in hindsight

Yes it would be nice to have Ennis/Carlson/Eberle, but it's easy to look back in hindsight and say that. Plus if we did get those guys we might not have Baertschi or Gaudreau.

But you can go back to hundreds of picks and make those hindsight judgements.
It wasn't like Ennis or Carlson were hotshot prospects that everyone thought would be surefire NHLers.
The FLames could have picked Daulton Leveille who was picked 3 spots after Nemisz and doesn't look like much right now or Anton Gustafsson who was picked a few spots earlier.
Having watched Ennis in the WHL he was tiny and looked like he would really struggle in the NHL if given the chance. Sure it would be nice to have him now but if he couldn't make the transition a lot of complaints would be about drafting a 160 pound guy in the first round.

Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie Top line likely JT Miller (HFD/NYR) between John Gaudreau (BC/CGY) and Rocco Grimaldi (UND/FLA). Alex Galchenyuk (SAR/MTL) on 2nd line LW.

For me it was neimz in the 1st round vs henrique in the 6th round. They played on the same team and line yet one got drafted so much later and looks to be a top 6 center.

So what you're saying is that Nemisz's potential is worse that Ennis and Carlson right now?
Not to grind the axe on the pick or anything. Hindsight is definitely 20/20 but I just said that Ennis and Carlson are not seemingly better picks. They're better picks period.

Henrique was 3rd round not 6th but I get what you are saying.

Well hey, let's be positive.
I bet some other teams wished they drafted Brodie before the 4th round, who looks like he's going to be a good, 40 point, puck moving defenceman soon here.

Honestly, I see him more similar to Patrick Kane in play style. Ennis is explosive and dynamic. Gaudreau is more skilled and amazingly smart.

Yeah I don't think Brodie gets enough attention as a great young D. He's physical, moves the puck well, plays smart in his own end and doesn't hesitate to join the play. But this thread is about Gaudreau.
Really happy to see the praise that Gaudreau is getting. It's well earned. I think he is going to be a special player for us.

Look I don't want to de-rail this thread anymore than I might already have, but sorry to say, yes he does. Nemisz benefitted from being on a very talented Spitfires team which probably helped him get selected to Team Canada at the WJC a few years ago. I watched him during that tournament and it was plain to see that he was a step slower and his hands failed him numerous times on glorious scoring opportunities. I even remember the commentators pointing out at one point that he was the lone Canadian forward yet to register a point in the tourney. Had a second opportunity to watch him in the Memorial Cup and things did not improve in that tourney either.
As for the suggestion that Ennis could not duplicate his game at the NHL level, people obviously wouldn't looking close enough or knew enough about the kid's character to realize that he is a tireless worker combined with a great skill set.
The positive at least is that Feaster and Weisbrod see the same elements in Gaudreau that Ennis possesses and didn't let his lack of size sway them from drafting him.

I said that and the fact that he was a Medicine Hat Tiger may also have played into my dislike and assessment of him.
PLus there are ton of kids with character and work ethic that don't make it, great skill set or not.

Calgary traded away the #17 spot to Anaheim. That was five spots before Eberle was drafted.

No they did not.
Calgary traded their 1st in 2008 & 2nd in 2009 to Los Angeles for Mike Cammalleri & a 2nd in 2008 (the Flames own pick that LA got in the Conroy trade).
Then later that day the Kings flipped the 17th to Anaheim.
I will also add that the Flames traded the 17th prior to the draft starting, they had no idea Eberle (or anyone else) would still be available at #17. Because in the mock drafts I have been able to find only 1 had Eberle falling as far as 17th.
