I think that the unchanging tenants of the constitution are drilled into peoples heads through their education and its simply incomprehensible to politicians and public servants to change it.

Combine that with an incredibly wealthy and powerful lobby group and you will never get change.

Besides I don't think an assault weapon ban is going to make that much of a difference as it leaves pistols out there.

I think that one answer is around the selling of magazine based weapons, maybe there should be a three shot limit on civilian based weapons.

Maybe leave guns cheap and bullets hugely expensive.

Personally I think that manufacturers should have a civilian weapons tamper proof deactivation system. I mean we're smart enough to put a chip in everything. Put a chip in all rifles and pistols that are designated for civilian sales so that the police can deactivate them remotely. That way if some idiot decides to shoot up a school you can shut down the rifle from afar, or if the police need to raid a house you can deactivate the fire arms before you storm the place.

You have a drive by happening shut down the weapons.

That certainly doesn't help when the weapons come out of China or Israel or Russia, but I'm sure you could convince those manufacturers to help with gun violence.

Add on if someone tampers with the chip the weapons explodes blowing their hands off.
Sometimes I wonder if you're slowly losing your mind.

Most liberal since carter, expensive bullets, deactivating firearm control chips?

Stunned, flabbergasted, speechless, etc.

"The 20 Little Angels"

I have CBC news on in the background as I'm doing stuff around the house. Seeing most of the kids pictures and bios today is really difficult.

As much as I generally dislike Harper I admired his stand against his government's own firearms advisory committee. Canada does not need to relax its gun laws.

http://www.canada.com/news/Changes+c...235/story.html

Quote:
Prime Minister Stephen Harper has issued an unexpected rebuke to his government's own firearms advisory committee, rejecting its recommendations and suggesting the group's membership may need revisiting.

"Let me be as clear as I can be," the prime minister said in response to a question from NDP Leader Tom Mulcair.

"Prohibited weapons exist as a category under the law for essential reasons of public security. The government has absolutely no intention of weakening that category of protections."
Let's see similar leadership south of the border

This was the opening from SNL last night. Done in perfect taste, IMO.

Thanks for posting that. I tried to catch SNL last night but missed the first 5 minutes and I wanted to see the opening - someone here posted about it.

Not just America, it isn't an American problem, it is a human condition problem:

A knife-wielding man injured 22 children and one adult outside a primary school in central China as students were arriving for classes, police say, the latest in a series of attacks at Chinese schools and kindergartens.
The attack in the Henan province village of Chengping happened shortly before 8am local time on Friday, said a police officer from Guangshan county, where the village is located.
Min Yingjun, a 36-year-old villager, was taken into police custody, said the officer, who declined to give her name, as is customary among Chinese civil servants.

I'm thinking he means 2nd Amendment rights vs. Westboro's 1st Amendment right to free speech, protest, etc.

Correct me if I'm wrong, Senator.

as in the numerous other times this same point has been brought up, the difference between the US and China attacks is the death toll. it is an American problem, because 20 children are dead vs. no one dead in China with no easy access to firearms

I hope so. That would make more sense.

Their right to picket has already been upheld by the Supreme Court. The right for 3rd parties, some of which can be quite menacing in appearance, to 'run interference' on their picketing has been upheld by default with that ruling.

I don't know if there are more groups like this around the country but I hope so.

I hope so too. If they actually try to picket those funerals I would not be shocked if there was violence. If I were a parent of one of those children....

I don't know. The WBC are truly disgusting, evil attention-whores. They absolutely have the right to do what they do--but that doesn't make what they do morally okay. They need to go away.

See, I dunno about this. Surely there must be a point where free speech ends and hate speech begins?

It's a complicated issue for sure.

it really sounds like he has had enough. i think we'll finally see a President fight tooth and nail for some real gun control in the US. it was also nice to see him mention mental health, because that's another key factor that absolutely has to get addressed in that country
