I absolutely loved the movie. I had an overwhelming sense of awe throughout large parts of it. I really liked the HFR and 3D. I saw the movie in 3D HFR IMAX and I strongly recommend the experience. The movie DEFINITELY was not too long and was certainly not boring if you like Middle Earth.

I'd say it was 8/10. Really enjoyable, but the 'extra' material they added to the core Hobbit story made for the film's tone to be disjointed. That, and Bilbo was almost no existant. And they messed up the encounter with the trolls. It was way better in the book.

Think it was 8/10, but if it had come out before FOTR I would probably think higher of it because there were some similarities, it really set up the 2nd/3rd movies, and after seeing the first I don't think extending it to 3 is going to be an issue at all

I thought Freeman was great as Bilbo, the HFR was a little jarring at first but after the first 15 or so minutes I got used to it and really enjoyed it

The Bilbo/Gollum stuff was fantastic

A bit dissapointed with the goblins though. Thought they could have been a it creepier. Thought the trolls could have been creepier as well.

I also went to see it last night (regular 3D). I really enjoyed it. I'm not a purist, so some of the discrepancies with the book didn't really bother me. Acting was top notch, especially Freeman as Bilbo. As others have mentioned the exchange with Gollum and Bilbo was exceptional.

Perhaps the one gripe I had was a few instances where the CG looked fake. I know a strength of LOTR trilogy was using people in costume, and I feel that would have been a better choice for one of the characters that was CG. Also, I know this story took place 60 years before LOTR, but the reverse aging of Galadriel and Elrond was a tad excessive (do elves even age?)

Loved the movie. Will see it again in theaters for sure.

I saw it last night in HFR 3D and really, really liked it. That said, I'm more blown away by the negative reviews it's been getting. My god, I don't know what more people could have expected.

The 3D was often incredible. It was a bit jarring in some close up action shots, but other times it was amazing. I would recommend seeing in 48 FPS and 3D, because you might not have the capabilities to do this at home. You can always catch the 2D, 24 FPS version later.

As for the length, I wanted it to go on and on. Too bad we have wait another 18 months or so to get parts 2 and 3. Although, there was one scene in particular that could have been easily cut (animals in the forest). And if you really want to save some time, the intro with Elijah Wood and Ian Holm didn't seem necessary.

The tone is much lighter than LOTR, and there is ample humour mixed in. So it's not another LOTR movie, just like The Hobbit is not book 1 of LOTR.

I feel sorry for people who genuinely didn't enjoy it. I like to think about how far movie making has come in the last 30 years. So many top artists and skilled technicians worked painstakingly ensuring every frame of the movie is flawless. And while on the whole there will some flaws, I really don't understand how someone would walk out feeling negative about the experience.

65% critics on Rotten Tomatoes right now, but 81% for fans. I think fans are going to like it no matter what, just like Justin Beiber could put out an album of mating elephant walruses and teenage girls would eat it up.

The common theme though between the negative and positive reviews is that it is too long and there are too many unecessary scenes. It sounds like they took a book that was supposed to be a short prologue and stretched it out too much to try and recreate the LotR movies.

well if you look at it, the hobbit is one book that is 310 pages long that they are making into 3 movies (which are all probably 3 hours long)

each lord of the ring books were 531, 416, and 624 pages long and each had their own movie, not 3 movies for 1 book. Each of those movies were 3 hours long

Not saying that it shouldn't be 3 movies (which it probably shouldn't going by LOTR, but I haven't read the books) but from what I heard from the people I did go to the movie with that did read the book is that it did have some stuff not in the book.

At times I felt it was a bit slow paced and could of potentially done without some scenes. It kind of seemed like they were doing a lot of setup for the following movies.

Like was there any point to the scene with the stone giants fighting each other? Other than give a brief scare that some characters died?

Just came back from seeing it tonight and I loved it. I honestly didn't find it to be too long and outside of maybe a couple of scenes here and there, thought the pacing was actually pretty good. It definitely takes on a lighter tone than LoTR, but then again, so does the book, so I don't think it's an issue. Very enjoyable and something that I will probably end up seeing in theatres again.

I just came back from seeing it at Sunridge. I caught the high frame rate 3D version and I was really impressed. I thought the movie looked great and I didn't find it too long. In a number of critic reviews they had mentioned that it was a very slow movie but I didn't notice that too much.

If you liked Lord of the Rings then you'll love this one. I'm looking forward to seeing part 2 in HFR 3D.

I was blown away, to me that is what LOTR should have been. I always felt like they cut out so much in those movies, so much was left un explained that it made it confusing even for someone who read the books.

This was laid out flat, opened up, every nook and cranny explored and every morsel delivered. I was so happy with this movie, and to me it was better than The Fellowship.

I am invested in these characters and I can't wait to see what Jackson has lined up for the next 6 chapters.
