With that caveat aside, I don't see how a wide reaching gun control bill (if it could even be passed, which I don't think it could... ever) would make a difference. The massive number of guns in existence alone makes the prospect of success slim. Are people going to turn over their guns willingly or through a requirement of law? Lots will, but a massive number will see this as large (possibly even a tyrannical) government invading personal domain.
Gun culture is too ingrained, too important, too hot buttoned in the US. It's actually a non-starter, IMO.

What is tha answer then?
How do we know strick gun control laws won't make a difference......clearly the status qou is not working. Will things change quickly no, but is change needed, yes.

And yes the 'if they had guns too' argument is so stupid.
It would also be interesting to see the number of times that a heavily-armed mass murderer has ever been stopped by a civilian with a gun. Very rare, I'd expect.

And then immediately another executive order preventing the media from reporting the name of any person suspected in a "mass shooting" (although that would probably be infringing on freedom of the press). No more "fame", no more "going out in a blaze of glory". Then, if you want to commit a mass shooting you can probably still do it, but you'll be doing it with handguns and nobody will ever know if was you.

No chance of that imo.
An executive order could be overturned with another executive order. For that reason, it would be politically advantageous for a pro-gun candidate to have as part of his platform.

Even more than the rarity of stopping a mass shooting, if the shooter takes out the armed person...they now have more ammo. I mean we all saw the NYPD being piss poor shots when trying to kill the guy who did that public shooting in September or so I believe. Soemthing tells me John Q. Public will not somehow be more calm and accurate under pressure. And of course the potential of the armed guy accidentally shooting innocents is very high. Adding more deadly force to an already explosive situation is a recipe for disaster, period.

27 dead - as per police. 20 children, 6 adults at the scene. The seventh is reported to have been away from the scene, according to the officer on CNN right now.

It should include handguns too but I suspect even if an EO like this was drawn up, that it wouldn't.

The unfortunate part about the post is that it's so spot on. The level of Gun culture and Fear that's ingrained within the US is just too strong to overcome with a simple change in the law. Unless there is a seismic shift in American culture, where there is no longer a sense of fear of neighbours, neighbourhoods or others, Gun control laws will never fly.

If I knew the answer, I'd be doing much bigger things than I am now.
I know it seems easy to just say change is needed, but I don't think it will make a difference. The fiasco that was Canada's long gun registry shows how difficult and dividing this topic can be.... in Canada. I could not even fathom what it would be like in the US.
For what it's worth, trust me that any meaningful gun control laws (which I think is impossible) in the US would not get out of first gear. There's so much legal precedence to use against it (aside from the 2nd Amendment) I cannot in any way, shape or form, imagine a scenario that would have a massive federal gun control law passed... ever.

I hate hearing the notion that if someone else was carrying a gun this wouldn't have happened. People who state this live in a fantasy world where all gun shootings play out like well orchestrated John Woo battles. It's just not an honest reality.
