I read a report that said that it was a couple of 9MM pistols which if someone really wants to get in Canada, they can through illegal means.

Apparently over 100 rounds fired according to a witness.

It is sad how desensitized I have become to these sorts of stories, but the fact that this involves kids has completely scattered my mind today. Not that mass shooting with grown-ups are OK by any means, but the thought of all of these kids being killed has me simmering with a very uncommon (for me) mix of sadness and anger.
Now back to trying to concentrate on work.

Newtown is an affluent area. There's a very good chance that the shooter wouldn't have the type of ties that would allow him to get access to guns illegally.
Edit: I don't know what to think. Reports now that the shooter was 20 years old, but other reports that he was the father of one of the children. Technically, I guess both could be true, but not likely.
Now police have a house surrounded. A second shooter or someone who helped plan this, maybe?

I think that if you took a poll, that the majority of CP would have no clue where to get illegal 9mil....

The Hartford Courant is reporting that an entire classroom is unaccounted for. It's not clear, but I believe that's in addition to the 27 confirmed dead.

Perhaps. I guess my larger point is more that the US's lax gun control is a symptom of their culture, and not the cause of it.
Changing laws is the easy part, but changing the culture that produces these kinds of acts at the rate it does is much, much tougher. The reason these things happen far less in Canada isn't because guns are harder to get; it's because Canada produces less psychos who are obsessed with guns and violence that will act out like this.

I would wager that the same majority polled would have no motivation to legally obtain a 9mm. You don't really know how to get something (or how easy it may be) until you actually want it.

Jesus, I wonder if he was a former student at the school, or was just a nut? I thought the shooter might have had a child at the school, but probably not if he was 24 years old
Absolutely heart wrenching tragedy.

I'm numb right now seeing these updates come through. My thoughts are with the families all over affected by this.
Again tonight I will find myself explaining to my daughter that there are truly some evils in this world.

The cynical part of me would not be surprised if gun sales goes up in the next week or two - typical fear of the "omg, they're gonna take away our guns".

There are unconfirmed reports that he was the father of a student at the school.

When one of the biggest lobby groups with the most money is a firearms rights advocacy group your not changing anything.
I'm all for gun control, but gun control on its own inherantly fails without dealing with the underground gun market and extremely punative punishment for gun crimes.

No, but someone who wants to murder a bunch of helpless children probably could. Though by the sounds of it this guy had more weapons than was initially reported.
