I don't think anybody in this thread has said that.
We all do some crazy things to varying degrees.
But f'd up people do f'd up stuff.
Some people who are a different kind of f'd up do a different kind of f'd up stuff. We call these people psychopaths. This is one of those cases.

I feel firmly that these guys should be made an example of. This kind of thing - setting incapacitated people on fire - should be punished to the full extent of the law.

in this case because the victim has been seriously burned, every paycheck that these punks gets for the rest of their lives should be a 75% for the vicitim 25% for the ######bag split.
I also believe for crimes like this instead of sending them to jail for any period of time and exposing him to career criminals a good bull whipping would be in order.
This isn't a prank gone wrong, pouring an accelerant on a passed out person and lighting them on fire so that you can film it and post it on the internet is pretty sick and the guy clearly doesn't care about the harm that he's doing as long as it makes him look cool.
MAybe the punishment should be lighting his junk on fire.

Could they charge this idiot with attempted murder?
I'm not that familiar with the way the law reads.
Just curious.

Psycopathy is a mental illness. Pyromania is a mental illness.
So to paraphrase, your response is "Lol... just a prank, he's an idiot, he's not crazy, well, maybe he's crazy"
Well, that certainly clears things up.

Plus his prank caused a pretty serious injury and its not like the idiot can say, I didn't know that he would get burned.
Its like throwing turkeys out of a plane and watching them splatter and then acting shocked when you realized they couldn't fly.

Unfortunately it takes an incident like this to show them just how dumb and dangerous it is. Cause they don't have enough forward thinking skills to figure it out beforehand.
This is not me defending this kid or anyone else who does dumb stuff, or participates in bullying (which this may or may not fall under) but it is me saying this is hardly a 'what is the world coming to?', 'the sky is falling', type of moment.

This is a bit different then the normal run of the mill party prank. your pouring a accelerant on a unconcious defenseless person and lighting that person on fire.
That's not a prank, that's bullying with pretty much a semi homicidal edge.
I get what your saying, the guy just be jerk, he's clearly ######ed. But there's a boundry line that he crossed when he picked a prank that no matter what would pretty much cause injury and terror.
To me that crosses the line from prank to at the very least assault.
A boys will be boys attitude dosen't fly with this numbskull.
They really need to bring back hard labor sentences and rock cracking.

Again I'm not excusing the behaviour or the lack of thinking behind. I would be fine with charges against this ######nozzle too.
However, it's not that far removed from stupid stuff kids do all the time. People give hot foots, and all sorts of pranks involving fire. People mess with passed out people at parties all the time too.
I myself used to cover my fingers or hands in flammable substances to pull tricks like that. I never did it to another person, as I had at least a tiny bit of respect for fire, but seeing what these kids do, I don't think it's much of a leap to go there.
Really, without being there, I think it's a little difficult to say just how much malicious intent was behind it. I'm thinking the larger part of the equation is stupidity plain and simple.

When I was in the military, we once put a bunch of glow stick stuff in buddy's beer at an end ex smoker. I am not sure if it was the amount of beer or the glow stick juice, but he left little puddles of glow in the dark puke all the way back to his hooch.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and call this a Pyro stunt gone awry. Not a prank, a stunt. Obviously this group of wasted youth have dabbled plenty in the Pyro culture. Now their big mistake here (outside of the painfully obvious) was using an unconscious, unresponsive person. They are stupid beyond all recognition in my eyes, I wouldn't pull that crap on anything or anyone. I also wouldn't call the kid a psycho either. An uneducated, undisciplined irresponsible piece of jam tard comes to mind. I'm not sure I believe there was any malicious intent here, just dimwitted desicion making. Full on beavis type crap.

Why are the words 'youth' and 'kid' being continuously thrown around.
20 years old is a full grown adult male. I had a frikkin mortgage a car loan and was paying property tax at 20. And so did a few other guys I knew. Is this current generation of youth that attached to the teet, that 20 is still considered a kid?

Pretty much. It's been trending that way for years. People stay at home longer, start careers later, and buy houses later and later in life as the years go by.
You'd be really, and mean really hard pressed to find a 20 year old with a mortgage and car loan now a days. Although, I would question if that was ever more than a rarity.

some news on this story...
Quote:
One of the men charged in a bizarre crime that left an 18-year-old man with second and third degree burns to his body has pleaded guilty to aggravated assault and assault with a weapon.
A lawyer representing 20-year-old Mathew Sweet-Grant entered the plea this morning at the Kelowna Court House.
Sweet-Grant will make his next appearance on Feb. 4, after a pre-sentence report and a pysch report has been completed.
The other man charged in the crime, 18-year-old Josh McWhirter is charged with aggravated assault and will be back in court on Jan. 8.
Both men remain in custody at the Kamloops Regional Correctional Centre, the victim remains in hospital.

Mmm... this makes no sense. I never said he didn't have a mental illness. I said he's not a psychopath and he's not... so I'm not quite sure what your point is?
