The article you linked says:

Quote:
The rocket was launched just before 10 a.m. Korean time (0100 GMT) and overflew the Japanese island of Okinawa.
and the cnn article says:

Quote:
The Japanese government confirmed to CNN by phone that it took place at 9.49 a.m. local time and passed over the island of Okinawa, though no action was taken to shoot it down. It said parts of the three-stage rocket came down in the sea off the Korean Peninsula, with another part dropping into the sea near the Philippines.

Sorry, my mistake. Don't know how I glossed over that paragraph.

Now CNN reports the N. Koreans say there actually was a satellite on board, and it is now in orbit.

The people are irrelevant in a dynastic system like this. Especially one where there is an active cold war between the Military and the Intelligence apparatus both of whom keep the Kim's in power.

The people don't matter, and GDP doesn't matter. If you can find it you would be really interested in reading about North Korea's watch and suit making businesses. It gives you an idea of how the government thinks.

I think the other really interesting thing is about and I'm going off of memory room 41.

I believe one of the main concerns about invading North Korea is potentially massive civilian casualties in South Korea.

This actually really concerns me. Between this and syria arming chemical weapons, there have been some really aggressive moves recently

Every time I think about the mess that is North korea, and any discussions revolving around Nucular weapons, I can't get this scene out of my head.

UN can not walk in anywhere.

The day and age of the UN being able to assemble a coalition like Korea is long gone.

Besides China and Russia would veto any action.

Did the launch actually fail?
As Buzzard said, there appears that they got their satellite to orbit

I also found this video pretty nuts. It's about the North Korean lumber camps in remote areas of Russia:

The labor camp videos were a great watch! I recommend it to anyone out there.

Thank God I am not North Korean!

I think North Korea has an insane number of Artillery pieces pointed at Seoul 24/7. I don't think it's enough to reduce the city to ashes but certainly would create an extremley high civilian casuality count. That's proably been their version of a nuclear detterent for some time now.

I'm suprised S.Korea hasn't built something similar to the Israeli Iron Dome defence system.

Get one of those set up and invade. Please...

Doesn't North Korea have the estimated largest army in the world, along with reserve force? Basically every cent they get goes toward their military, with a society brainwashed into thinking the regime is basically God on Earth, and a geography that is the exact opposite of what is needed for effective mechanized warfare. I think invading North Korea would quite possibly be one of the worst moves any modern nation could ever do, even if you ignored the fact that China would enter on the North Korean side.

They may have large numbers but I can't imagine they're military is very sophisticated.

I also don't think there would be a single step taken into N.Korea without the support of China. I also wouldn't be suprised if the Chinese have highly placed assets in N.K. regime that might be able to assist the invasion as well.

I would imagine that military technology gets shared quite readily between the North Koreans and Chinese, it's in the Chinese interest for it to be so, and even if for some unlikely reason the Chinese didn't enter the war, you would likely see something similar to how the first Korean War played out with the Russians lending high-tech aircraft and trained pilots to the North, but on a more sophisticated scale. Even if the Koreans were technologically lacking, the geography of the country lends itself to a total bloodbath when boots hit the ground. Mechanized warfare is almost an impossibility over much of that country. You're going to have men going toe-to-toe in mountains, through valleys, and in forests. 9 million soldiers armed with sticks and stones in that type of scenario is still going to bleed you dry.

The Chinese would never, not even for a moment, entertain the United States and South Korea sharing a border with their country, so if you don't believe it would happen without Chinese support, it's not even worth bothering to contemplate, to be honest. As far as national security concerns for the Chinese government, sharing a militarized border with American forces would have to rank right up there with anything else I can possibly imagine.

The North Koreans are their lapdog. They're tolerated and kept on a leash (even though like any dog they sometimes jerk that leash) because it serves the Chinese interest. That interest is in large part keeping the Americans at arms length and away from the Chinese sphere of influence.

Iron Dome is made for shooting down rockets, the DPRK has artillery and large volumes of it trained on Seoul, which is only 40-50km from the border.
