People keep saying Calgary won't announce their plan for a new arena till Edmonton has all their financials in place..What if it takes another two years for that to happen?..Is Calgary going to still stay idle?

People have suspected that Calgary Flames might be waiting until Edmonton had finanicial in place. However, I don't think Calgary is going to wait just for a sake of waiting. Calgary will operate on it's own timeline.

I still think that Calgary will be playing in a new rink before Edmonton does.

Interesting:

Gord Gillies@Gord_Gillies
hmm.Oilers guy Pat Laforge talking about rink plans for #yeg, mentions something about #yyc getting a HUGE new venue. stay tuned! #flames

Gord Gillies@Gord_Gillies
Laforge says the 'size & scope' of the #yyc venue will impact #yeg when it comes to concerts, etc. That'll be a switch! #hello-A-listbands!

I'll be thoroughly disappointed if we don't trump Edmonton in having the better arena.

Sounds like the multi-sport entertainment complex that has been rumoured/speculated about.

Sounds like the Oilers playing on the competitive juices between the two cities. I'd like to see Calgary get a huge new complex but I won't trust the Oilers to break that news since it's self serving.

Last week, Mike Ilitch put forward a proposal to build a new arena complex for the Wings in downtown Detroit.

With the Rangers basically rebuilding MSG, and the Islanders moving into the Barclays Center, that means that the Flames now have the oldest arena in the NHL with no publicly announced replacement plans (although the Oilers and Wings plans don't mean they're necessarily closer to happening).

John Shannon@JSportsnet

Good news in Edmonton. City and Katz Group will re-start negotiations for new arena. Next step is a January 23rd meeting.

I have no inside info, but it would not surprise me at all if Calgary completes a new arena before Edmonton.

The question katz has to answer publically in edmonton is how much cash is he putting into this building on day 1 of construction.

The answer has to be a big amount, say 100 million, and this gets done.

If he answes with anything else, then this lingers indefinately.

Totally agree. The Oilers are playing every card in the book to get taxpayers to irrationally shovel them money. They are blackmailing the city into looking past the numbers of the project.

First greasy tactic was all out corruption, by donating a large amount to the Provincial PCs and trying to circumvent election donation laws.

Second greasy tacitc tactic was to pretend that Katz could make more money than the current agreement somewhere else like Seattle. They played up the old arguement from the 90s prior to oil boom and 500k population increase, that Edmonton is a small market team that needs to be heavily subsidized by the community. Complete BS, a million plus city in Canada is a big market for hockey, no other place in the US not currently served by an NHL team could possibly eclipse the Oilers in TV viewership or $ per ticket sold. Coming back cap in hand to city council is evidence of this bluff.

Third greasy tactic is to evoke the old tale of two cities garbage. That's all this was, trying to strong-arm city council into doing something because of the potential that Calgary could get something grander. I think it's rather that than implying anything concrete about Calgary's arena plans.

Bang there's your solution. Use the arena that's already there, working, and making money for the team. If Katz thinks the investment in a new arena will bring in more marginal revenue the cost and risk of financing it in the private sector then he'll do it. Otherwise, enjoy the existing arena.

This article, that Cole cites, is even better. It is absolutely pathetic what Katz and undoubtedly eventually the Flames owners will do. They want to spend our money to make their profits. I hope that the City of Calgary calls the Flames bluff, move the team to Kansas City, we dare ya to do it.

I don't know about multi-sport, but the project might be further along than most people think.

To answer his question though:

Not to be a total contrarian here, but is the former Northlands Coliseum such a hellhole?

Abso-freaking-lutely.

I would suspect when it is all said and done that Katz is looking for about a 750 million dollar package from the City of Edmonton and the province of Alberta. Katz is willing to run the arena for free and collect the profits from the arena. The Oilers would play rent free under Katz's proposal and at the end of the day Katz would spend around zero dollars on the arena (the original proposal was for Katz to pay 5.5 million to rent the arena for 35 years and keep all the profits, with the City of Edmonton giving him 20 million for "advertising", but Katz came back and said that he needed 6 million from the city to pay for running the arena, so at the end of the day he appears to need 500K a year from the City to run the arena). Thankfully, he has taken that ridiculous request off the table, and agrees that he should be required to pay the equivalent of 1% of the value of the building in rent per year.

I would be shocked, absolutely floored, if the Flames do not ask for money from the City and the Province for their new sports facilities. Then the Flames will be in the same dog and pony show that Katz is conducting up in Edmonton.
