So, I've got my ticket to the Sea Dogs vs Remparts game tonight. Looking forward to actually seeing Culkin live; it's not very often the Flames have a prospect in the QMJHL. I'll try to take notes and/or give a bit of a report after the game.

Ortio went 1W 2L in his final week before the break. Tonight's game was a 1-0 loss (35 saves). His stats for the first half of the season: 92.57 sv (6th in the league), 2.16 gaa (3rd), 3 shutouts (3rd), 11 wins (5th). He's been good, his team has been limp.
Markus Granlund has had an unproductive season. He gets ice time but doesn't produce points. So that kind of sucks.
The team Finland is sending to Russia next week is not even a B-squad, so if Ortio gets starts, he might get a rough ride particularly against Russia who are icing all their biggest stars like Malkin, Ovechkin, Datsyuk, Kovalchuk.

I think expecting another Granlund to hit it big was a little unlikely. Management went for the riskier pick with Markus, unfortunately it doesn't look like it's working out right now.

It's way too early to draw conclusions. Young players go through ups and downs especially when they have to play against men. I try to maintain a bigger perspective so I don't go crazy when some kid has a great month or write someone off after a dry spell.

Probably better for Granlund to try the AHL next year.
Heat could use some real offensive skill.
Would have been a good time to sell High on Granlund last year to the Wild.

Ryan Culkin had one assist and was a +3 as Quebec beat Saint John 4-2.

If top-tier AHL offensive talents like Kolanos, Walter, and Bartschi are "struggling" to get things done, it is probably from Ward's system. Granlund could easily and likely be another Sylvester in terms of skill and the type of numbers he'd put up on the Heat
Also, my comment is not a knock on Ward' coaching ability. He's clearly a good coach, but his "system" doesn't seem to do much for offensive productivity

He really should have had two assists; he was pretty instrumental in the Remparts' second goal. He made a really effective pinch at the line, which led to a turnover and the Quebec player making a beautiful deke. He had a pretty quiet night offensively aside from that one play, and had a pretty active stick in the defensive zone that broke up a few Saint John chances, such as they were. The score really flattered the Sea Dogs; they didn't have much of a chance the entire night.
This is a bit unrelated (ok, maybe a lot unrelated), but man has that Saint John team fallen from grace. I said it last year in the Memorial Cup thread, but the Sea Dogs went from being a really well-rounded team to being total creampuffs. They try to play like they're still the powerhouse team that pretty much steamrolled their way to the Memorial Cup in 2011, but they aren't even close. Huberdeau looks completely bored out there, and you can kind of tell he thinks the league is a bit below him. And the team in general behaves like a bunch of little brats when things don't go their way, which I guess is to be expected, but is still disappointing to see. The team's mentality is far too Canuck-esque for my liking.

To be fair until this season the heat really haven't had any players with offensive skills. Kolanos isn't someone who I would consider being a top tier player with his inconsistency. And Baertschi at 17 points in 19 games isn't that bad. That puts him top 10 among rookies. It would be hard to predict on how Granlund would do with the Heat. Especially since I haven't seen Granlund play live but from what I've read on here he could have decent stats especially if paired with Baertschi.

That would be great! If Granlund went 0.5 PPG in his rookie season in a league as defensively stingy as the AHL, I'd be ecstatic.

Brossoit stopped 29 shots and was named 2nd star in a 4-2 win over Calgary.
Wotherspoon picked up an assist in a 6-2 win.

Wahl had a three point night (1G 2A) on Saturday. The grizzlies lost 8-4 to the Alaska Aces. Grizzlies are still missing players to injuries. Colby Armstrong (brother of Grizzlies co-captain Riley Armstrong) has signed a contract with the Grizzlies for the duration of the lockout. It will be good for Wahl to see an NHL player in action.

I haven't heard anything about Howse's injury, so I assume he's good to go this afternoon.
I guess they didn't need to call anyone up from Utah.
The Heat's injury list is getting pretty ugly: Baertschi, Walter, Kolanos, Ferland, Aliu, Bouma, and Eddy.
I wonder if we'll see anyone in this afternoon?

Wahl is really tearing it up lately. 13 points in his last 6 games. I have a feeling he is a dead prospect as far as the flames are concerned, but gotta wonder if there are more injury troubles for the Heat if he will ever be given a chance again.

Wahl is a prospect that I am still interested in. In the Penticton tournament a year or two ago, he looked great and I was very excited to watch his progress. He's had some significant injury troubles and made some poor choices, but he's a very talented player and I think his game fits the new Flames puck control identity.
I'd like to see him move back up to the Heat if the NHL comes back and there are some promotions. He is a player who I think Troy Ward may be able to teach professionalism to and he might still have NHL upside.

Agree completely. I think one more shot for Wahl in the flames organization would be a good idea, especially with all these injuries to the Heat. Personally I would have preferred he got called up rather than Howse.

Struggling?
Baertschi has 17 points in 19 games as a rookie pro.
Walter has 15 points in 19 games.
Kolanos has 8 points in 12 games.
Not sure I'd describe any of those guys as struggling this year. Ward having the team play amazing defensively does not mean he's holding the offense back.
Also Sylvester who you are touting has 10 points in 20 games and thus qualifies more for the struggling label than the 3 guys you did mention.
Strange comment.

Horak is really "struggling" as well under Ward's restrictive "system" tied for 3rd in the league in goals after showing little offense last season. I wish Ward wasn't holding him back.
In all seriousness I find that people who are quick to blame the coach's "system" for this or that a lot of the time don't really have a good idea of what they're talking about.
Did Ward suddenly change his system? Because Kolanos had 61 points in 47 games last year. And Walter had 59 points in 75 games. Kolanos must be one of the best players in the league to be scoring well over a point per game in such a restrictive "system".
Silliness. Guess we shouldn't expect brilliance from a poster named boogerz?

Evidently you missed the quotations around the word "struggling", and you failed to read the post I was quoting that said "the Heat could use some real offensive skill."
They clearly have it and are not struggling for offense. If they were to be struggling, however, it would probably due to Ward since it would be ridiculous to have as much firepower as the Heat and struggle to put up goals.
Perhaps you should focus less on insulting people, and more on reading the posts you're responding to
