Abandon ship! Strangers on the internet say the movie is only sort of ok!

People get invested in the films and books and want to see them do good, especially when it comes to beloved series' like LotR and Star Wars. They get worked up, and get disappointed. I don't think many, if any, people are going to "abandon ship", regardless of what RT says, though.
That being said, the scores on RT are generally reflective of movies I like or dislike, with a few exceptions, and obviously only really within genres I already like. My expectations are definitely tempered now. I'll still see it, but I'm a little disappointed it likely won't be as good as the LotR movies.

I absolutely hear what you're saying and am similarly invested with the material that you mentioned. I mean I camped overnight at Westhills for the Phantom Menace (and #### that #### three ways to next Sunday) and just last night listened to the 1968 BBC Radio dramatization of the Hobbit in its entirety. But you've made sweeping blanket assumptions (about your own potential enjoyment of the film!) before entering the theatre and that seems really weird. Was it ever going to be "as good" as the LOTR movies? It's a completely different experience, crafted out of novel for children. That's how I'm going in. And also to see just how cinematic and bombastic they have made the Professor Tolkien's material, at the same time ready to enjoy the experience and try not to feel too protective of the story that I grew up with as a kid. Anyway, I also look at RT occasionally but i'll be damned if i'll let that stuff affect my opinion of the film beforehand.

You're mistaking it affecting my opinion of the film with it affecting my expectations. It's definitely tempered my expectations going in, but my opinion of the film itself won't change until I actually see it.

The line between opinion and expectation seems ta be gettin' pretty blurry is all I'm saying. Folks seem to put an unreasonable amount of stock into reviews.

I doubt it beats the number The Avengers put up early in the year, even with Imax numbers boosting its total.

Interesting article which includes a download to an interpolated 48fps trailer. It's interpolated from the released trailer so it's not actually a true 48fps trailer but it does give an idea of what it will be like.

I'll reserve judgement on 48fps until I experience it in 3D. It can be a bit unnerving and makes some people sick. But for me, my eyes adjust and for the most part I like it better, no judder and artifacts on pans and fast motion, you get to SEE the action with proper clarity.

lol not even close.
I'm guessing around 100 million.
or half of what The Avengers made.

I expect this is a very conservative estimate.
Late shows Thursday at Chinook:
IMAX
10:00 PM (100% sold)
AVX
10:30 PM (90% sold)
Friday at Chinook:
IMAX
11:20 AM (half sold), 3 PM (75% sold), 6:45 PM (99% sold), 10:30 PM (99% sold)
AVX
11:30 AM (25% sold), 3:15 PM (50% sold), 7:00 PM (90% sold), 10:45 PM (80% sold)
And that is 4-5 days away.
A quick check of other theatres shows similar results.
It will be a big weekend for The Hobbit.
I would encourage people to not worry about the critics much. There are a fair number of critics who just seem to take pleasure in panning great movies just for attention or something. For me I have always found IMDb ratings a better indicator of how much I like a movie... The Hobbit is at 9.0/10 right now.
Just my $0.02.

I still remember seeing the Dark Knight the day it came out. Had a record opening at the time, and our theater was half empty. The same theater for the Hobbit is completely sold out.

If you remember Dark Knight, Avatar and Avengers, the first weekends were basically all sold out completely.
100 million is still an amazing opening and I could see the overall gross throughout its run be pretty high.
Edit: Box Office Mojo predicts 137 million opening.
http://www.boxoffice.com/featured_st...pected-journey
This site says around 80 mil
http://www.comingsoon.net/news/weeke...s.php?id=96680
So you subtract a bit for the lackluster reviews that weren't out yet when that was published and my estimate might not be that far off.

$100 million is a great opening, but I still think that The Hobbit will blow it away. Hopefully it can find a way to make it past freakin Twilight.
Also, Avatar's opening weekend was not stellar. It was $77 million. It picked up steam later on and was marked not by its incredible opening but its incredible longevity.

Plus isn't The Hobbit going to make a lot more because of the higher FPS showing and tickets being more expensive?
I still think they'll hit close to $200 million.

4 more sleeps?
You should just toss in the LOTR trilogy and by the time it's ending you'll be just in time for Hobbit.

I'm old and have work the next day. I'm rather glad it's at 10 and not midnight. At least it's kinda late for special feel. Seeing JJTrek in May 09 at the first screening was cool, but it was 7pm on the thursday.
