How are you staying in shape this winter?
Ever since it started getting colder outside I've been concerened about putting on a few pounds. I'm not going to lie my diet sucks. I eat out everyday for lunch like Mcdonalds, KFC, Donairs whatever and my dinner habbits are not much better. I'm not a big guy 150 pounds but I used to play hockey outside with some friends 2 days a week in the summer for a few hours, play tennis on weekends and hit the gym on off days. Doing all these activities allowed me to eat like crap and still look "good" Now that it's winter time, I obviously can't do a lot of outdoor things. I've been doing my best to hit the gym 4-5 times a week but going to the gym all the time gets a little boring. So what are you doing to stay in shape for the winter?

Skiing. Boarding. Floor hockey. Kettle bells and weights in the basement. And a fancy new cycle trainer for my mountain bike thanks to KTrain.
Come to think of it, I'm actually more active in the winter months. Then again I also drink more beer...
Wouldn't mind getting into cross-country if we actually have snow around town. If not I might start lane swimming over the winter.

I'm going to buy some squat stands and begin the 'starting strength' program at home. I just finished p90x and am looking forward to cutting the wacky stuff and going back to squats, presses and deadlifts. What is 'starting strength' you ask?:

I avoid the gym, virtually all the fancy equipment is inferior to free weights and I like to watch TV as I work out. You don't need a ton of floor space and you can get an A-1 workout with only dumbbells, barbells, chin-up bar, bench and squat rack.

Skiing and Boarding are cool but thats usually a weekend thing and even then its tough to get up there + the cost. Floor Hockey is a good idea and I do that on Saturdays but even then it sucks that you have to pay for it haha. It's during the week that I find it most difficult to stay active.

Yeah, I'm thinking of getting into cross-country skiing as well.
January 1, 2013 marks my fourth consecutive year of exercising six days/week with only the odd break if I have a cold or something and never for more than a few days. I'm pretty proud of that as I never envisioned myself as the exercising type. In the winter I use my elliptical every day and I plan to snowboard a lot this year, too.

I did p90 a couple years ago, that's not really a bad idea, but I don't have the money for a good weight set and resistance bands just arn't my thing. When I did it , I mainly focused on the plyo which I thought was awesome. Which was your favourite workout for p90?

Training for the Calgary Marathon in May, lots and lots of running over the winter. Most of it on an indoor track, but hope I can get out for some long outdoor runs as well if it ever warms up past -20 here in Saskatoon. Also doing 2 days a week of weights to maintain muscle mass, and playing intramural sports (hockey, volleyball).

Take dog for a 1/2 hr walk every day to the offleash park. Eat well balanced meals (not too many carbs), get 8 hrs a day sleep. Cut down on coffee to no more than one or two cups in the morning. Keep positive outlook. Minimal time at computer.

What size track? Anything shorter than 200m and I'd think you'd be walking with a leftward lean after a long run.
I stick to the treadmill when I'm forced to workout inside, but I usually just bundle up and deal with the cold unless the ground is too icy.

Is coffee that bad for you? If you dont put much creamer in it, I don't see how it's that bad for ya.

I started taking boxing training a few months ago and plan to carry it through the winter and on until I decide to stop. Its been a lot of fun and I could see and feel results very very qucikly. Really happy with the trainer I found.

I was feeling the same way a couple months back, I had been a member of WHC or Golds for the past 6-7 years and was getting bored going to the gym and simply lifting weights/running all the time. So I quit Gold's (that was fun...) and joined the Talismen Centre and it has definitely rejuvenated my interest.
Now instead of only being able to lift weights or run on the treadmill, I also have the option of swimming, playing basketball, playing volleyball, playing badminton, running on one of the indoor tracks, joining one of their bazillion classes, diving off the diving boards (makes you feel like a kid again!) or simply sitting in the hot tub or steamer after a nice workout.
It's probably not for everyone, but I can honestly say that joining a facility with a wide range of options has made me look forward to everyday I go to the gym, and I am going 5 days a week.

It's a 210m track, it's pretty short but at least they alternate the directions so I'm not turning left perpetually every day. I was doing the treadmill but it was aggravating a calf strain that I had, and I find running on the track my calf feels fine so I'm just sticking to that for now.

I used to find the gym would get boring going 3-5 days a week. Its the first month/45 days you have to get past. After that you start to look forward to going to the gym. Rarely will you see any major results in under a month. Once you do notice results, you feel that you worked too hard to get to that point and you continue going which leads to more results.
At least this is how I always found it.
