Default LF: Older pre-slim ps3 with ps2 capabilities-FOUND!

Hey there,

I'm looking to get a hold of a ps3 with ps2 capabilities. I'm not picky over hard drive size as it is for my brother. He swears by the xbox 360, however enjoys playing the old gta games for the ps2.

He has a ps2 already but likes the appeal of having a ps2 with an hdmi port as the back of his tv is full of cables.

Let me know what you have and the price you are looking for, I can also trade a jersey or two from my thread.

I will be in Calgary on Friday and Saturday.

I've got an old PS3 but not sure if it plays PS2 games, do you know how I would figure this out, aside from actually purchasing a PS2 game?

Only models with 4 USB slots in the front of the console will have backwards compatibility.

Also there are no slim models in general that play PS2 games. Only fat consoles made prior to October 2007 feature this.

I have a few myself, so I might be willing to part with one, although I have no idea what I'd actually want for one. Also you need to know that the older models can breakdown, and they can run very loud at times.

The original ones had hardware compatibility, and the 80GB version that came out after had software compatibility.

Was that not removed with a firmware update?

I think only the Linux capability was taken out, not the PS2 capabilities.

They are hard to find because they are valued by both collectors and hackers. They were the most expensive and the largest chip process so they run hot, loud, and died the most often too, contributing to rarity.

My suggesting is to keep your eye out on Kijiji for dead 60GB PS3s with 4 USB ports. Then fix them with a reflow. I got mine for cheap that way, otherwise they can be pricey depending on what firmware exists on them.

The later PS2 emulation models are not so bad at playing PS2 games also but the supported titles will be a little smaller and not perfectly emulated sometimes.

I had mine fixed by the killasoft guy, $50 was the cheapest (3 month warranty).
