Best: The year my family decided to stop giving Christmas presents entirely, and that we'd just spend the day together eating and drinking. No shopping, no malls, no how-much-do-I-spend or is-that-what-they-really-want BS. Took all the stress out of the holidays.
Worst: right handed hockey stick, when my dad knew I shot left!

Hahaha a bit OT, but that reminds me of the first time my dad took me shopping for a new stick. I went over to grab a right handed stick, and he tried to convince me that I shot left.
By rights I should shoot left, but I don't, and never have. We spent 20 minutes in Home Hardware before he gave up and bought me the right-handed stick.

I actually collected the entire blacktron lego set, it took me several years of Christmas and birthday gifts but I still have them all.

Best: A leather jacket in '95. It has lasted almost 18 years, worn every spring and fall, and is still in great shape. I cherish that thing.
Worst: Nothing.
I went out of my way to get my 4 siblings + their 4 spouses and 8 nieces/nephews thoughtful gifts that I was positive that they wanted (from Home Depot, Bed Bath and Beyond, Toys R Us, spas, etc) at around $75 each was well over 2000. Not one of them responded - no gift, no card, not even a single phone call.
I stopped sending anything at all after that, and was made a pariah for it.
It's nice to see the rest my family passing on the true meaning of Christmas to the next generation.

Best gift:
In ~1996, my old man got me an Ibanez TR50 and a Marshall B30 amp in a combo from what used to be Guitarworks on Macleod (before it split to Heritage and the South location became MCC.
Played that bass for at least 7 years.
Worst gift:
Sometime around 1992, my grandmother bought me a denim/sequin pants/jacket set that even 9 year old me knew was hideous and would condemn me to get beat up every day. Thankfully my mom knew better and never made me wear it.
This is the closest thing I could find to what it would have looked like...

Best: Nintendo. I remember it like it was yesterday, I was 5 years old and it was the first Christmas I had spent at my Oma's house. I had been begging for a Nintendo since I first played duck hunt in a Canadian Tire. I still remember in the store, using my arms like a caliper to measure the proportions of the Nintendo Box and then comparing that to the box under the tree, I was 90% sure it was a Nintendo and I could barely sleep that night.
Worst: Last year my wife (who would probably shoot me for telling this story...) decided to buy me a trip to HER favorite city and tickets to see HER favorite sports team play. Now, I know you guys are probably thinking BOO HOO you have a wife who wants to travel and watch sports.. Well it wasn't even a sport I watch! Besides which, the trip cost me more than $6000 after the dust had settled and we usually have a budget of $200!!!
Close 2nd Worst: A framed giant picture of the head of a bald eagle. It was so creepy I "misplaced" it on the way home.

You should buy her some hookers and blow for her birthday.

Best - Probably the original NES, I don't think I slept until the morning after. The Montana staple of a shotgun when I was 12 was pretty cool, as well.
Worst - My mom has been on a roll of terrible gifts in the past few years.
A New Orleans Saints garden gnome
Saints poncho that she bought on a trip to Mexico
 ,
A nose flute (seriously)
I usually tell her that I don't need anything, as I'll typically buy what I want when I think I need it. This year I made sure to give my mom a list of a few things that would be nice, especially since we'll be at her house this year and hiding my amusement will be much more difficult.

I have a Flames poncho just like that one. I wear it when my Mexican friends come and visit. I'm kind of a dink like that.

Best was Les Paul Classic Gold top from the old man:
Worst was a Flames calendar from a family member a few days or so after they were giving them out for free at a home game.

I'm old so pretty hard to buy for... best gifts were always toys as a kid.
worst was a few birthday's ago. Now granted, as I said I'm hard to buy for and I get that and traditionally my answer to "what do you want for..." is "whatever, I don't know". Anyway, my wife got me tickets to George Strait - her favorite old guy country dude. Birthday was in October, concert was the following year at Stampede. Between the birthday and the concert, I got busy at work or had some other committment, so she ended up going with a friend. Awesome gift... for her.

I still remember the year I got this from my Aunt and Uncle...
And for my worst gift, that's a tough one. I'll need some more time to think about it.

Best: Last year my boyfriends Dad (who lives in Italy) bought us all tickets to fly out to Spain for Christmas. That was awesome.
Worst: When I was a teenager my Mom always bought us socks & underwear as one of our gifts. One year, she decided to be 'up to the times' and 'with all the latest fashion' and bought me thongs, which I opened up in front of the entire family, much to my embarrasment. At 15-16 years old, it was awkward, but now I think it's hilarious.

This thread is making me want to run to Toys R Us to buy some Lego.
That Monorail set is pretty damn awesome. I always liked the non-branded legos much better anyway.....my favorite were all the Castle / Knight legos.

In my mind, they were always "Robin Hood" legos.
