I bought my ex-wife that mixer. The one JonDuke posted just doesn't compare. Also, that's a smoking price for it (even for a CTire "Sale" - Costco sells that one for $399, IIRC).
Oddly enough, I think MMF is right. Tell her it was on sale/scratch and dent/bought from a guy in a van for $175. She can't complain about $25 over. That's what I'd do. Then again reading my first two paragraphs of this post what the hell do I know.

I don't know if lying is such a great idea. What will you say if the machine breaks and she wants to get the receipt to exchange it? You can insist on doing it for her, I guess, but there could be an unforeseen circumstance where she ends up seeing the receipt.
Just tell her that you saw the best deal in history and you couldn't resist, because it's for her. And apologize if it makes her uncomfortable. Tell her that next year you'll find a gift just as thoughtful, for half of your budget.

Lying would work if you burned/trash the receipt, and claim you got it on a terrific sale online...of course though, that falls apart if she wants to see the deal herself...

Don't worry about the price she will love it. Tell her that Xmas is more about giving than receiving and you would like her to have something nice. I always go over our limit and not once has my wife complained. Might even get you some extra attention

Other than the "go make me a sammich" part, I agree with this post. Tell her that you got a gift for both of you so she shouldn't buy anything for you. She gets her mixer, you get baked goods, and you stay close to the $300 total limit that you put on gifts.
