It's often called the "Bystander effect". The more people there are around, the more your mind thinks that it is not morally responsible for not helping. After all, there were [x-1] other people around. They all could have helped. If you're alone when you're witnessing this, you're bearing the full weight of the consequences of yourself...that if he dies, you were there to stop him.
Also, there's the fact that the attacker was pretty deranged and it wasn't out of the question that he could have shoved you down with Han.

This guy was being a good Samaritan and this is what he got for his trouble.
Considering he was trying to protect others and be helpful this seems an undeserving obituary for him.
How is plastering a photo of a man who is seconds away from being killed showing any respect to someone who did nothing wrong but try and help?

Had someone called the cops instead, he would still be alive.

There are some questions as to what lead up to this, some reports say the victim was trying to help the perpetrator and asking him what was wrong while others say the victim initiated a confrontation and was drunk. Either way he certainly didn't deserve anything like this.
I'm not sure what someone calling the cops would have done, this wasn't a hour long fight, it was a quick occurring event.

Regardless, this should be sign that it's well-past due for New York to modernize their subway and actually install glass walls/doors like many modern global subways have so this sort of thing doesn't happen again.

A good safety tip that many people are not aware of- so it is worth repeating.
All Calgary Transit platforms have a cut away that you can roll under if you do not have time to get away from an oncoming train.
You can see it well in this picture.

I had the same sort of feeling reading it. But it's obviously a crazy situation and I wasn't there like you said as well, so who knows what really happened.
Plus, as others mentioned, waving your arms and yelling isn't bound to be very effective either.

This morning in the Edmonton Metro:
http://metronews.ca/news/edmonton/46...empted-murder/
Similar situation. Three drunks attack one drunk and throw him on the track. Guy gets kicked in the face as he tries to get up. In this instance the bystander call for help and intervene. The three guys are charged with attempted murder.
"Both EPS and Edmonton transit officials applauded bystanders who called for help and also stood between the suspects and the victim, allowing the victim to pull himself back onto the platform."
As for the Calgary incident. I thought that was a drug deal gone bad. Fight just happened to be at a time when a train was pulling in.
Trains scare me. I always stand well back of the yellow line. That said, after moving to Edmonton, these train stations scare me after 7pm. Some guy got stabbed over a backpack this month too.

Every time something happens with a train this comes up and every single time it's ridiculous. The cost to do something like this is immense, on a system like the one the MTA operates I can't even fathom how many billions of dollars it would cost. It would be a lovely addition, but it is completely outside of the realm of possibility.

Look at you, putting a value on human life! The value of one baby is immeasurable and cant be put at risk over something so trivial as "billions of dollars!!"

Running towards the train would still be counter productive, unless you're Superman.

What's more disturbing and more of a disappointment than the cover, is the person taking the photo. They clearly saw the man and his predicament, instead of helping him and saving his life, they fumbled for their camera to take a picture.

Just curious, but how expensive is it? I was in Hong Kong, and they have those along all its MTR lines. It's just a glass wall, with glass doors at all the train doors. The train pulls up and the glass doors open when the train doors open.
Edit: Just to add, if the fancy automatic doors are too expensive (although, I don't see why since every mall or convenience store has them), would at least putting up guard rails along the yellow line not be better than just leaving it wide open?

Anything with moving parts is going to be expensive. Plus you adding another thing that can go wrong, and need to get repaired. Not to mention your just adding another thing for vandals to go after.
I would imagine the initial cost would be quite high, but it's not just that, there's yearly cost to it too.

Guard rails that open how? And where? There are at least 3 styles of trains that operate just on the 2 lines that I use regularly, there are probably another 3 or on other lines. Each has doors at different locations.

Is the schedule of trains completely disrupted if the conductors slow down before they reach the station? That might be the cheapest solution.
