Lawyers don't lie... they just mislead. Lying is against the rules in a court of law. They just obfuscate, obstruct, and obliterate the truth, in defense of their client...
Which is probably one of the reasons why so many lawyers become politicians. Its the perfect training ground.

I'm not sure what's more idiotic, the notion that the goal of a barrister is to mislead the court, or that all lawyers are somehow defense attorneys.

The goal of a lawyer is to win, within the rules of the law (unfortunately the truth sometimes gets conveniently forgotten).

I have had a few dealings with a lawyer who is considered the foremost expert in his field in Canada. He said that most of time and effort is spent pre trial helping to determine whether the client should settle or proceed. He isn't looking into what they can get away with but rather whether or not they are right.
