Rask coming back is huge news for the Hitmen.

@gdrinnan: Red Deer Rebels fire head coach Jesse Wallin. Owner/GM Brent Sutter now interim head coach, with Jeff Truitt as associate coach.

Jesse Wallin is a great coach and will bounce back from being relieved in Red Deer. Always gave me ample time when I needed to chat!

Hitmen sent Joey Kornelsen to Kamloops today for a 5th round pick. The Hitmen had too many bodies and Kornelsen is a 3rd line/4th line center.

Blazers F Jordan DePape retires from junior hockey due to another shoulder injury. Very sad to see this.

F Dylan Willick has a broken leg and D Austin Madaisky fractured a wrist gone for good too.

All 20-year olds.

Leaves the Blazers with only one overager (Ranford).

They need a No. 2 centre, top-six winger and a No. 1 defenseman.

Expect to see some major player moves soon. The team is back on winning track but not looking their same dominant self. A brutal schedule and injuries finally taking a toll.

Kamloops has picked up 20 year old Charles Inglais from Red Deer today. Good player who seems to have troubles, has worked his way off 3 other teams.

Uh oh:

@SNPatrickKing: Huge sanctions against the Portland Winterhawks today. Mike Johnston suspended for the balance of the season.

@TSNBobMcKenzie: WHL drops hammer on Portland, GM-coach Mike Johnston suspended for balance of season, $200,000 fine, draft sanctions: http://t.co/XKpUpmEP

Wow.

http://whl.ca/article/whl-sanctions-...nd-winterhawks

Quote:
As a result of a series of player benefit violations which have occurred over the past four seasons, WHL Commissioner Ron Robison has suspended the Portland Winterhawks from participating in the first five rounds of the 2013 WHL Bantam Draft and the forfeiture of their first round selections in the 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017 WHL Bantam Drafts. Should the first round selection in 2014 not be available due to a conditional trade, Portland will surrender their second and third round picks in the 2014 WHL Bantam Draft. The WHL also announced the Portland Winterhawks have been fined $200,000 and Winterhawks General Manager and Head Coach Mike Johnston has been suspended for the balance of the 2012-13 season, including the 2013 WHL Playoffs.

@TSNBobMcKenzie: I am hearing unequivocally that WHL audit of Portland did not turn up any irregularities with acquisition/signing of Seth Jones.

That seems pretty harsh.

Wonder if Vancouver and Calgary are concerned or if they have enough control of the league that they don't have to worry.

Portland's response:

http://www.winterhawks.com/article/w...ons-suspension

Quote:
The Winterhawks were found to have committed the following violations:

• A player contract signed in 2009, involving flights for the player’s family and a summer training program
• Over the last five years, seven families were provided flights 2-4 times per season based on financial need and their distance from Portland
• Twice in the last five years the team paid for two players to each have a one-week summer training regimen
• The Winterhawks provided a cell phone for its team captain for a period of three seasons

The WHL’s audit found no violations involving monetary payments made to players, their families or agents, or any violations related to the league’s educational packages.

“After fully cooperating with the league’s investigation, we were extremely surprised at the excessive nature of the sanctions, and we don’t feel they are in line with the scope of the violations we were found to have committed,” said Johnston.

“We believe that apart from recruiting trips and parents’ weekend, there is no prohibition in the rules governing flights for players’ parents, which were the majority of the infractions,” continued Johnston. “We are currently exploring our options on how we will proceed. Despite our objections, the league has made its decision, and our players will continue to pursue the goal of winning a WHL championship.”

Those penalties are too excessive. It makes you think what they would have done if Portland gave families money in the six fiugres. Team expelled from the league? Loss of first round draft picks for life? I think Portland will appeal and will have the penalty significantly reduced.

The punishment is for 'undisclosed' benefits. Anyways I'm sure if you're accusing the Hitmen and Giants of such actions than surely the Lethbridge Hurricanes are likely participating in it too.

The Lethbridge Hurricanes are much too incompetent (and poor) to be involved in something that would improve the team and help get wins.
