The tragedy began on Saturday afternoon while the family, including an 18-year-old daughter who was unharmed, was walking with Gregory’s girlfriend along a steep beach at Big Lagoon, about 270 miles north of San Francisco, Jones said. Howard Kuljian threw the dog a stick, she said, and a wave, possibly as high as 10 feet, pulled the animal into the water. The son went in first to try to rescue his dog, Jones said.
“Then the father went in to save the son. The mother was swept in at that point,” she said. “The waves are big and powerful, and that’s a very steep beach. The waves pound the beach. When the waves are pounding like that, you don’t have a chance to breathe.”

Sad, but totally avoidable.

If it's between a dog and a human against the forces of nature, I put my money on the dog first, then the water with the human coming in a distant 3rd.

I'm not sure if i would jump into the ocean to save my dog.... good thing my dog hates water and wants nothing to do with it.

the son attempted something very honorable imo. Obviously the dogs life isn't worth more than his, but he was attempting to save something that meant the world to him.

Darwin award would be jumping into the water just for thrills.

If I saw my dog was drowning, I'd jump in to try and save him, if I felt there was a chance.

To be fair, it was only the kid trying to save the dog. The dad went in to try to save the kid, and the mom was just swept up because she was standing too close to the water. I don't think the kid was thinking when he jumped in, maybe it was just instinct. Tragic though, that's for sure.

No, it wouldn't be. Darwin award is doing something so stupid that you remove yourself from the gene pool. He succeeded.

I know dog lovers can't see past the stupidity because they see this guy as a hero when he really is just an idiot and sadly cost two other people their lives.

The kid falling into the wild god pit came to my mind when reading this. Some people argued it's human or parent instinct to jump in and save the things and those you love. Unfortuantely, there comes a time where you have to cut your losses so both you and the original vicitim don't both lose your life.

Human beings are nothing against the force of nature and you have to realize this. Sad, but avoidable deaths.

2. Daughter who was the only one who realized that the raging water is something she should probably stay away from entirely.

I clicked on this thread ready to give out a Darwin award, but when I read the actual story my reaction is "That could have been me"

The daughter and son's girlfriend watched as the Mom, Dad and Son drown. Ugh.

Personally, I blame the son.

None of this would have happened if he threw the stick a little more to the left.
