Flavours of Mexico abound for Calgary’s little cowboys

One of the most popular styles comes from the taqueria — simply decorated, brightly lit places that typically have excellent tacos and burritos at great prices. That’s what Taqueria El Charrito at 808 Edmonton Trail N.E. (403-478-2924) is all about.

Opened by Graciela Rivera and her brother, Juan Jose Rivera, a couple of months ago, El Charrito — it means little cowboy — is a lively taqueria that seats about 30. The menu includes the dishes mentioned above plus chile rellenos, tortas (sandwiches), quesadillas, and, of course, tacos (wrapped in two taco shells). On Saturdays and Sundays, El Charrito also serves traditional pozole and menudo soups.

You order at the counter and choose the meat to be included in your dish. There’s chicken, pork and three kinds of beef: asada (steak), birria (shredded beef) and lengua (tongue). The dishes are simply presented on single-service plates or wrapped in tin foil to-go. It’s quick, simple and cheap, with everything under $10.

Rivera hails from Jalisco, the Mexican state that birthed tequila and mariachi bands and many other Mexican mainstays. She managed Mexican restaurants in Seattle and Vancouver but moved to Calgary a year ago after visiting her brother here. She likes the city, so she decided to open a taqueria.

I've been to El Charrito twice. It's very good, with one caveat, they heat up their meat in the microwave, and as a result the pork gets pretty dry. All the other types are delicious though, and they have Horchata so that pretty much seals the deal for me.

I wanna get in on the weekend sometime to try their Posole.

El Charrito is indeed pretty good. I tried all of the different taco filling styles, and I have to say the best is the shredded beef, the chicken, but above those by far is the lengua. Really good flavour and tenderness, and you know you aren't going to find that option in too many other restaurants.

I have yet to try their menudo, but it's on my to do list.

El Charrito has chorizo as well. No idea why it's not on the menu, because the chroizo buritto is amazing.

It's between 7th and 8th Avenues, just north of Diner Deluxe.

Unless you mean the Taco Bell/KFC on Edmonton Trail at 13th Ave.

A mexican guy I worked with told me it is the best mexican restaurant in the city. I thought it was pretty good but I am not big on authentic mexican food.

I kind of overdid the mexican food down here in Arizona. Now days, I might go out for mexican once a month or so. It's great, but I just had too much of it.
