U.S. World Junior Watch: In-Depth Look at Forward Competition
One month from today, the U.S. National Junior Team picture will begin to clear as USA Hockey brings an expanded roster to New York City for the pre-tournament camp.
Johnny Gaudreau is the only real rock-solid lock for the LW position. Then there’s a host of other guys where you could make great arguments for being on or off the roster.

Thats going to be weird for me. I'm still undecided if I want USA to do good. If they do it means more chances to watch Gaudreau play...buts its USA.

Dont forget Sieloff and Gillies. Both players have a very good shot at cracking the roster this year. Matt Deblouw might also be a darkhorse to be invited to camp as well due to his terrific start to his NCAA career.

No Baertschi this year. He's 20.

I still won't cheer for the USA but i am with you on that I really want to see Gaudreau at the WJ. Are there other American prospects we have for the WJ? Arnold etc are too old now i think?

I see. Then no, it is not okay to cheer for the states, only that Gaudreau tears it up in preseason and all games until their epic collapse against the Canadians

As much as I love Team Canada I am a Flames fan above that and wouldn't mind if Gaudreau scored a clutch GWG over Canada in the WJHC. If it was the Olympics then I would be very upset but I am never bent out of shape if Canada loses the World Juniors.

I'm a Flames fan first, so this year I'll be cheering for the Americans. I've never really been passionate about the WJC other than looking out for the Flames prospects. This is not the same as the Olympics in terms of importance to me, so I have no trouble cheering against Canada if another team has the Flames prospects.

I am always confused by this considering the risk involved in these guys never playing for the Flames at all.
With development, trades, injuries etc. it seems at best Gaudreau is 50/50 to ever play for the Flames and we all saw how cheering for Erixon worked out for Flames fans when he played (not that I think that Gaudreau will turn into an Erixon situation.)
I can see cheering for a guy but really don't get cheering against your country for a rival team just because some guy who was drafted by the Flames plays on the team.
I could kind of see if Baertschi or a first overall pick that was 99% sure of playing for the team was there, even then still hope Canada would destroy them, but for a risky guy like Gaudreau it seems odd to cheer for the whole American team to do better than Canada.

Some people don't think patriotism or love of country starts with who wins the hockey game.
Anyways, a post like this and my response are totally off-topic.

I would rather see Gaudreau play some fantastic hockey and see the U.S. lose in the finals to Canada.
Even if Canada has no Flames prospects I'd still rather they win.

The rules are completely different for Gaudreau if you think he could pull an Erixon and pull the "I'll re-enter thee draft" routine and he also can no longer pull the Schultz and go free agent either.
I think if Gaudreau makes the NHL chances are it'll be with the flames.

I'd like to believe that there are still players out there who are honored to have an NHL team use a draft pick on them. If I'm not mistaken, I think Gaudreau didn't expect to be drafted.

I don't think that is what is going to happen at all. I used Exrion as an example of a guy Flames fans cheered for over Canada at the WJHC and then never played for the Flames.

A guy I used to play with got drafted by a team that he absolutely hated (Bruins). Vancouver is his team. He was simply thrilled to get drafted. I was talking with him a while back and I asked him what he thought about being drafted by the team he hates the most in the world, and he said that he honestly couldn't care less. He said he would willing play his career out as a 4th line plugger for the Bruins if it meant playing in the NHL. There are guys out there with integrity that will play just for the sake of playing. For every Erixon or Schultz there are 500 guys that play for the love of the game.

This.
I hope it's a USA-Canada final with Gaudreau scoring 5 goals, but Canada wins 6-5.

I realize that, I just thought your 50/50 chance was a little low given your reasons how you came to it.
Personally I would give Gaudreau a 90% chance of signing a pro contract, an 80% chance of playing an NHL game and a 50/50% chance of having an NHL career.
For the first few years at least I would put it at about 97% to be for the flames.
