Interview with the coach of Providence. Talks about Gillies and Jankowski. Nothing earth shattering, but speaks highly of both.

Big collapse by the Spits last night they were up 5-3 with about 3 minutes left and ended up losing in OT.

I didn't watch the whole game, from what I saw, definitely not the game he had Thursday. He was out on the tying goal, which came on a PP, and the whole team looked bad on that goal. The Spits PK is terrible for the most part this year, and they keep getting into penalty trouble, which was what caused the loss last night.

Kulak has an assist so far tonight. Culkin, Gordon and Sieloff were all scoreless in their games.

The Utah Grizzlies lost 4-3 against San Francisco in the shootout. Utah had a 3-1 lead with just 2 minutes left in regulation, but allowed the tying goal at 19:59 and eventually lost the game in the SO. Wahl had 3 points (1+2), Cameron had a goal and Patterson had an assist. Howse scored in the shootout. Cameron seems to have a very good season (6+11 in 14 games) and Wahl is progressing (5 points over last 3 games, now has 3+8 in 11 games). Howse needs to start lighting it up soon if he wants to have any future in this organization.

Kulak's had a very good weekend, all things considered. 3 games in less than 48 hours, 3 points.

Feaster and Weisbrod did a great job drafting defencemen in the last draft. Sieloff, Kulak, and Culkin are all very important pieces to their teams. It's unfortunate that the Giants are the worst team in the WHL.

Matt DeBlouw had an assist tonight. He's tied for sixth in league scoring:

I think I'm going to have to find a way to find one of his games online sometime, this kid just keeps on rolling. Our college prospects have to be one of the strongest pools of college players in the league. At least in the top 10.

I'm not all that familiar with college hockey. What's the best conference (?) in Division I? Is it Hockey East?

I wonder that also. It's hard to say, but would DeBlouw score as much in the Hockey East if he were playing there?

Just looking at a quick glance of the rankings it looks like WCHA or CCHA would be the best or at least have the most teams ranked high.

But not sure if that is a long term thing or just this season.

They do seem to have a lot of hockey powers in each conference though.

I think this helps: http://www.ncaa.com/rankings/icehock...ens_hockey_rpi

The NCAA's top level has 59 teams in 5 conferences. Hockey East is one of them. Rest are listed in wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/College_ice_hockey), sorry couldn't find a better source. But I didn't know this was happening "The 2013-14 season will be the first played under a significant realignment of conferences".

To ask whether one conference is better than the other is much like asking which division is better in the NHL, sometime it is clear, sometimes not, and it varies year-to-year. There are perennial powerhouse teams (Boston College recently, but also Minnesota, Wisconsin, Denver, North Dakota, Michigan), other Hockey East teams like UNH and BU are also often in the mix.

As a personal note, I was at UMaine doing grad studies for 3 finals, when they won in 1999 and lost in 2002 and 2004... exciting times. They are not so good this year.

Sieloff and Gillies in contention to make USA World Junior team.

Patrick Sieloff grants Team USA another option and another guy who brings a bad attitude to the ice, and that is a compliment. He’s already delivered a host of devastating checks as a part of the Windsor Spitfires and did it a bunch last year at the NTDP. One thing that stands out about Sieloff is how he somewhat altered his game at the Under-18s last season. He made a bigger commitment to sound defensive play than trying to destroy every guy as he crossed the blue line. That allowed him to be a big part of shutting down opposing forwards, and he never really lost his physical edge in the process, just harnessed it.

Jon Gillies has been mostly terrific in his freshman season at Providence. He’s played all but one period for the Friars, and has registered a 5-4-1 record, 2.05 goals-against average and .924 save percentage. He’s also a 1994-born player, which means he’s eligible for the next World Juniors and with a relatively shallow goaltending crop among American 1994 and 1995-borns, the U.S. is likely to need him in 2014. Getting that WJC experience is important, especially when Gibson is the clear guy and the No. 2 goalie might just be along for the ride.
