But she was turned away.
The barbers, who are all Muslim, told her their religion didn't allow them to cut the hair of a woman who is not a member of their family.

On topic.
This is pretty dumb from both sides. Where exactly in the Koran does it say you can't cut a women's hair? I know of about literally 30 Muslim men in Calgary who cut women's hair, including my brother.

I thought businesses can refuse service to anyone for any reason. Don't they have that right?

Not for ANY reason but they didn't have to tell her the truth.

Not based on discriminatory reasons, no. I'm guessing she's saying they're discriminating against the female sex.

She should be taking to court whoever eventually gave her that haircut.

Obviously this woman is trying to highlight what she perceives as Muslim discrimination against women. She doesn't NEED to go to this barber. I mean.. That Jewish guy in "It's a Wonderful Life" chose not to make a stink when a store refused to serve Jews (sorry for the early Godwin). People do need to stand up for their rights, not just shrug off discrimination. And I think Muslim treatment of women is something that needs to be put in the spotlight, but Muslim women are scared to speak out on their own.

Any guys want to join my class-action lawsuit against Curves? They're the reason I'm lazy and out of shape, due to their discriminatory screening.

My response would be who cares what the Koran, or Islamic custom says about this. There are hundreds, even thousands of vendors that provide hair cuts in the Toronto area. Don't intentionally seek out inconsequential issues (which is exactly what she did) especially when there are people out there dealing with legitimate issues. This only feeds the many individuals on the right of the political spectrum that scoff at human rights legislation in our country.

When my sister first moved to Toronto, she went to a hair salon that she didn't know was apparently only for black people. She asked if she could get a hair cut and the girl gave her a dirty look and said in a snarky tone; "We don't cut your kind of hair here...".
She should have filed a complaint.
(not really, besides the rude tone, I thought it was fair)

In other news, there's a restaurant on the West side that's only hiring large-breasted women.

I hate the human rights comissions. If the complaint is legitamate their is no reason that it shouldnt go through regular court. As much as Ezra Levant is a windbag his opinion on the human rights commissions is absolutely correct.
From wikipedia it high, ights another case in Ontario where a man refused to print envelopes for a gay and lesbian couple because it was against his religion was found that having to print the materials was a justifiable violation of his religious rights. However it limited it to just a letterhead and wouldnt force him to print things that directly violated his religion.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freedom...sal_of_service
So in this case I think religion may be legitimate defense under the charter as the speific act of cutting hair would be directly against their religion as opposed to the case above where the service itself wasnt against the persons religion just the customers
