Sounds too good to be true? Then it is.

I've bought and sold dozens of items, with zero issues what so ever.
This is pretty ignorant. Kijiji is relatively a new fad so I can see some older person not familiar with the internet or selling stuff online to get "taken".

Having trust in humanity doesn't make someone an idiot, it might make them naive, but not an idiot.

You can't fix dumb.

I think the same people getting scammed on Kijiji are the same ones that got scammed through the mail, or with snake oil salesmen. The has always been and there will always be a % of people that get taken.

New fad? I've been browsing Kijiji for 5+ years. If it's a new fad for someone, then maybe they need to stay off the scary interwebz and stick to getting scammed by a door to door salesman or a telemarketer.

Do you understand what "relatively new" means? Maybe they should, but that doesn't make them idiots.

I really hope you get scammed by someone on Kijiji.

An over reaction by an emotional mark, just waiting to get scammed.

I wouldn't condone taking the chances you do on coins via Kijiji and Craigslist. The lack of recourse is just too high, especially if you are dealing with anything of any value. At least with eBay/PayPal, you have some recourse.

PM'ed you about this as I too am a collector.

Not really anymore. I've done a few large sales with cash and I get the gears from my bank every time because they're trying to track larger cash transactions.

No, only carrying a paper map in a vehicle makes someone an idiot.

The thing about kijiji scams is the people who most likely will get scammed don't understand the reason why.

Two weeks ago my wife posted to sell a leather sectional on kijiji. Asking price was $1000, a good deal given the piece.

Within 10 hours or so she had many inquiries. Lots were asking if we'd take 500, 600, 700, 800. Some said, they might be willing to pay full price, but want to see it first.

One inquiry said, "love the sectional, want to buy it, am willing to pay right away via Paypal. I'm out of town though so once I pay you I'll have to send my friend to pick it up."

The wife showed this offer to me, and I told her it was a scam and to not even respond. She, not having ever had a Paypal account, couldn't figure out how I knew it was a scam, and thought I was being overly suspicious.

I explained how it worked, and why Paypal would ultimately refund the buyer their money, even though we let the couch be picked up by someone the scammer sent.

She was still skeptical ("how could Paypal exist if it was so easy to scam?). So I suggested she email the person back, and say, sorry, cash only.

The response was to explain how easy it was to send and receive money via Paypal, and even explained how to set up an account. They said they couldn't use a cheque or cash because they were out of the country but really wanted the furniture. This person's good friend was willing to pick it up right away.

So I said to my wife, email her and say, if it was so easy, why she couldn't paypal the money to her good friend, and then have them pay us cash.

The response was almost hilarious it was so bad. A big song and dance about how her friend wasn't able to use his own bank account, because he was a charity worker and didn't have a bank account.

Anyway, to the OP, good reminder thread. Those who don't know how things like paypal or other online payment systems work are certainly vulnerable.

Edit: I should add that we did sell it, for the asking price, via kijiji, for cash, so it worked and the buyer and seller were both happy.

It's not really new at all. Before Kijiji there was Craigslist, and before that there were classified ads in papers. Nothing has drastically in how goods change hands from classified ads in newspapers ages ago.

I agree with your main point about some people who are easily scammed not necessarily being idiots. Some scams can be pretty sophisticated and some people can justifiably be naive or too trusting for whatever reason. However, a huge percentage of scam victims are probably idiots.

RCMP are asking others who answered the online ad, titled "Exchange House With Good Time," or a similar ad, to contact the Chestermere detachment.
In an ad with that name recently removed from the website Kijiji Calgary, the poster described himself as an open-minded, decent, professional, employed man with "one extra house where a nice girl can stay [however] long she wants." The house is described as having a fridge, stove, furniture and an internet connection.

"She just [needs] to trade some fun with me," reads the ad.

I know there was an awful outcome to this, but I have to wonder why someone is responding to a kijiji add where the payment is "fun with me". Seems like a pretty big red flag that you may be dealing with some not so savoury people.

Im not sure if this was supposed to be sarcastic or not, but having a paper map in the car has saved my ass multiple times when I'm driving through north AB/SK and theres no service for my phone. How is this idiotic?

I prefer using a paper map. It's so much fun to sit there with a pencil and plan your route all on your own!

Good call. eBay would be really struggling without your generosity.

So, your wife made you sell your fancy couch? Did she make you sell the smoker too? Congratulations on the marriage!

A little off topic, but you being a collector of coins, can you recommend where I could take coins and bills to to get appraised? I recently inherited a very large collection of coins and bills that are worth a tidy sum of money, and not sure what they're worth. The family member who started this collection started it back in the 60's, so it's quite the collection of coins and bills. PM me please.

I've only been ripped off once when dealing with people online, and that was because I let my guard down in dealing with someone who was a regular poster on a hockey forum that I frequent.
