I had the lunch buffet at The Rock and it was quite tasty. That's my recommendation.

I wouldn't rate Las Palermas as amazing myself, but it's not terrible. For the typical Mexican you expect in Calgary (Salt & Pepper, Julios, etc.) I find it similar, but better than those. If you enjoy something more along the lines of Tu Tierra, it will ruin the rest of them and you will find them all bland, Las Palermas included.

Not a fan of Aastha at all. Expensive and not good at least when I went there once. Indian Flame is a much better choice for Indian Food.

I think that's a fair assessment. I haven't yet found a good Mexican restaurant in Calgary although I certainly haven't tried all of them. I tend to base my comparisons on the restaurants I've been to in Mexico and the southern U.S. which isn't really a good comparison at all.

Bamboo Hut was a success.
Wow... I LOVE the Spring Rolls at Rose Garden on Stephen Ave in Calgary, but these were delicious as well and they were definitely made fresh to order, or so they seemed.
Had the Pad Thai and it was also delicious. Massive portion. I even caved in and went for the Deep Fried Banana desert.
The waitresses indicated that they have a location in Red Deer now as well (but they didn't tell me if it had the same name or not). Was worth checking out Sylvan Lake though. Looks like a nice town (from what I could tell in the darkness of night) with a lot going on near the lake. If I end up working in Red Deer again, I'll definitely go back.

Do give Tu Tierra a go then. I've heard that while it may not compare quite to southern US Mexican, it's the best you'll get here. I have never heard anything but a rave review about their Puerco Bean burrito.

The one in Red Deer is called the Blue Dragon. It's in kind of an odd location, but apparently the food is as good.

Last time I was in Red Deer, I ate at Moxies.
That's all I can suggest.

Drive past it on your way to where?
Unless you're on your way to Yukon or Alaska I am doubtful you'll improve much on Red Deer as you go further North.
Agreed though, I'd never go there if not being forced by my employer.

Home to Edmonton. Say what you will about Edmonton. At least it's not Red Deer. Sure I have to deal with the odd mullet wearing sweat pants. but it's worth it. At least it's not Red Deer.

I've never been to Edmonton, but seeing as all the cosmopolitan Calgary yuppies hate it so much, I'd probably love the place.
Too far from the mountains though, so I'll never live there.

The cosmopolitan yupplies only come up here for sporting events. And both the stadium and the arena are in the ghetto.

Just got back from Blue Dragon. Odd location is right... wtf.
Ordered the exact same things I got at Bamboo Hut.
The service had a few faux pas (considering I was the only one there for the first 15 mins and the place never had more 4 other guests before I left), but the food was good. The vibe and service at the Sylvan Lake location is way better though.

I don't see what is so bad about Red Deer that would make you avoid it on principle. I've lived, worked, and am now going to college here and find it a great place to make a living.
Pardon me for possibly taking the discussion off track, but would you care to elaborate on this for me?

People that bash Red Deer I found have never really spent any time here. They might have gone to one bar or restaurant in the past that doesn't measure up to "Calgary standards" and pass judgement on the whole city based on their one insignificant experience.
I left Calgary for Red Deer 9 years ago and I wouldn't move back to the big city if you tripled my salary. Red Deer has everything you would want in a city except the traffic, NHL hockey and maybe a Bass Pro Shop.
I can get to work in under 10 minutes, I know most of my neighbors and have a big yard. Just 3 of many things I couldn't say about Calgary life.
Nice pace of life, smaller town feel with big city amenities. Works for me.
