I assumed they were just huge fans of methamphetamines and one day in the midst of a particularly mellow buzz figured it'd be a cool name.

Not sure what the flight cost is like from Calgary, but once you get there I didn't find Iceland to be all that expensive. Drinks at bars weren't cheap, but probably around the same price as Calgary. The same goes for food, and I had one of the best meals of my life there too (at this place: Fiskfélagið which apparently means Fish Company but is likely some sort of perverse sex act). Moral of the story, you can definitely do Iceland without breaking the bank.

Did you find that once you were there though, there was only so much to do?
I would love to go there, but I think after a fews days, I might want to move on. That's the only thing that has stopped me so far.
I had some friends that were working in Greenland for a while and on time off, the company they worked for would either fly them to Reykjavik or St. John's, and they told me that Reykjavik is nice, but gets boring fast.
I'll still probably end up going at some point though, but I'll make it part of a bigger trip.

An article on how this fake story is growing:
http://grapevine.is/News/ReadArticle...ding-Spreading
Quote:
A factually inaccurate article about Iceland published by USA Today has appeared to have had a rippling effect through the international media.
As reported, last September a promotional campaign conducted by Promote Iceland through the Inspired By Iceland homepage asked tourists to come up with a new name for Iceland. While this caused a temporary stir in the Icelandic media that this might be a serious campaign, Promote Iceland was quick to emphasise that this was just a fun project.
Project managers have repeated stated - in the Icelandic-language media and in the Grapevine - that this was in no way an official campaign, but rather an amusing exercise to get tourists to think about what Iceland means to them. Nonetheless, USA Today published a factually inaccurate article contending that Iceland is officially seeking to change its name as a form of post-financial crash re-branding.

If you just hung out in Reykjavik I could see it getting old, but there's so much to see that if you're into the outdoors even a little bit you could spend a decent amount of time there. I only did 4 days, so not a long trip, but we really only had time to see the things closest to Reykjavik, and even then it was a little packed in (due largely to partying until 6am and sleeping until 1). There were a ton of really cool looking things that we simply didn't have time to do all over the island. I'm definitely planning a return trip.
Also, the hot dogs. Oh the hot dogs.

Iceland is one of the coolest places I've visited.
Reykjavik is nice, but it's small and can be done in 2 days - the real magic of the place lies outside the city. The landscape is so incredibly diverse, it's like visiting different worlds every few dozen kilometers - Mars-like barren wastelands, lush green fields, cliffs plunging into the ocean, glaciers floating to the sea, all right off the highway.
I'd love to go back and spend a week with good hiking gear, rent a 4x4 and walk a glacier and volcano.
This place should really be on everyone's bucketlist for places to see.

Iceland is green, Greenland is ice. Those shifty vikings wanted Iceland for themselves.

We just had our first official snow yesterday, considering we are on the same lat as Alaska thats not too shabby.
Its more likely to rain in Reykjavik in the winter than it is to snow, temps are usually around 0-5c during winter, with the coldest usually going around -10c.
The gulf stream keeps us warm in the winter thankfully, otherwise we would be a winter wasteland.
Here's a bunch of live cams in case you want to see the interior and other scary places where it most certainly does snow.
