Agreed, the political aspect of this whole situation has been absolutely bizarre. From the actions of the local municipality to the involvement of GWI and their political (and business) agenda it's been an absolute gong show.

Glendale set for political shift
http://www.azcentral.com/community/g...cal-shift.html
The will of voters is open to interpretation.
On the one hand, they handily ousted Clark, who has become the most outspoken supporter of the Coyotes in the past year. On the other, voters by a 2-to-1 ratio opted to keep a sales-tax hike that provides the city room to move forward on a hockey deal.
Councilman Manny Martinez, who had frequently cautioned voters that repeal of the tax hike would have meant unthinkable cuts to city services, favors the agreement.
Asked whether the voters’ message in keeping the tax hike was also to go ahead with the Coyotes deal, Martinez said, “I would hope so.”
Scruggs said the vote should not be seen as a mandate to move forward with Jamison. Rather, she said voters were protecting services, from public safety to libraries.
“Let me tell you something, I’m a duly elected council member,” Clark said last week on a Valley radio sports-talk show.
Clark went on to say that a vote on the agreement with Jamison would happen Nov.27.
“A Coyotes vote is coming, folks,” she said.
City officials wouldn’t go that far, saying the deal is not yet ready to come before council.
A reworked $320million deal was presented to the council last month that would lighten the city’s payments in the early years and build in penalties if Jamison doesn’t bring in a minimum number of non-hockey events each year and for each game not played because of a lockout. A labor dispute has thus far halted this year’s NHL season.
Skeete said Jamison conceptually agreed to some of the changes but has since offered alternatives, on which they have not come to an agreement. Skeete said two sticking points are the penalties, but he wouldn’t provide details on the other two.
“We have tried to be helpful,” Jamison said last week in regards to renegotiating the deal that council already had voted on.
He said he was hopeful and expects the reworked deal to go back to council for a vote in two weeks.

Business of hockey @NHLbiz RT @NHLhistorygirl On this date in 2008, the NHL officially took control of the #Coyotes, according to papers filed with the court.
Four more years!

Yvonne Knaack said in yesterday's council meeting that she won't vote for the Coyotes deal until the new council is in place. That would swing the vote the other way to 4-3 against (the three voting for are Clark, Frate and Martinez). Even if Lieberman doesn't vote, that makes it 3-3 with the Mayor breaking the tie.
Joyce Clark tweets:
Joyce Clark @clarkjv I urge everyone to review tonight's council meeting & what CM Knaack says. Go to http://www.glendaleaz.com and cable channel 11 to watch online & worry

I can't believe that it's been four years...
It's asinine for a lame duck session to make a decision of this monumental importance.

I saw that - it was not clear to me if it was the Coyote deal she was talking about, or another budget issue.

If the council votes on this before the new council is sworn in, and passes, that is the most monumental F.U. to the entire City of Glendale.
That's like screwing a chick you met the night before, and when she's leaving in the morning, she says "I forgot to tell you... I have herpes."
Then, she quickly takes off.

The fact Joyce Clark is panicking about it really makes me think that it is the Coyotes deal.
But even if she's talking about another issue, the reason for it is that she wants the new council to vote on it. You'd think that would apply in any case, no?

From Munshi's tweets it sounds like Knaack and Clark were talking about votes on budget cuts and lay-offs (though this could certainly have connections to the Coyotes deal).
sonu munshi @smunshi Knaack: Suggests waiting for new council on this decision. You can lay off 2 middle management employees and still make as much in savings.
sonu munshi @smunshi Clark:There will be other recommendations and rationales to not cut. But cuts have to be made.
sonu munshi @smunshi Scruggs noted Knaack's comments to wait for new council to decide on cuts. Can't pick and choose what decisions to hold off. #Jamisondeal

Accountability and transparency top Weiers’ list
http://www.glendalestar.com/news/art...9bb2963f4.html
The main topic for many citizens, however, is the Coyotes arena management agreement.
“I hope they (city council) wait for the new council and mayor to weigh in on the decision,” Weiers said.
What really has him concerned at this point is the citizenry’s expectation with the failure of Proposition 457, which would have repealed the sales tax hike. Citizens may expect that the money raised from the sales tax hike will save city services. Weiers said those same citizens may be “terribly upset” if they still lose those services in spite of their vote to save them. He said some councilmembers are obviously pushing for the Coyotes agreement for fear the new council will turn it down.
“But our first responsibility is to our citizens,” Weiers said. “I think citizens are going to be correctly upset.”
Current council should obey will of people
http://www.glendalestar.com/opinion/...9bb2963f4.html
Last week, Glendale elected a new majority to the city council. A couple of days later, one of the losers on election day was promising a vote on the Coyotes agreement this month by the current lame duck city council.
This promise is outrageous and shows no respect for Glendale’s voters. The voters just elected who they wanted to represent them for the next four years. The current Glendale City Council should respect the citizens’ decision and defer all controversial decisions, including the future of the Coyotes, to the new city council.
The new city council needs the maximum flexibility possible to deal with the fiscal mess created by the current city council. Ramming a Coyotes agreement though the lame duck city council just complicates the situation, and makes the new city council’s job harder. The current city council has had three years to deal with the Coyotes situation and failed miserably. Let’s let the new city council look at the proposed agreement and the other obligations of the city and let them decide what to do. That is what the voters said they wanted last week and that is what the current city council should do.

New outlet mall opens to huge crowds in Glendale
http://www.azfamily.com/news/New-out...179600461.html
An estimated 5 million people are expected to shop at the new mall each year.
The new mall is projected to bring in about $2.5 million in sales tax to the cash-strapped City of Glendale each year.

and draw nothing from the east valley cities, as a new resident to Mesa. I have no reason to go to Glendale outside of NHL games. There is a mall on almost every exit on the US-60 freeway.
But this is still good for Glendale, but I can already see even more tumbleweeds at Westgate. This mall will actually draw visitors FROM Westgate imo.

Is that it? That seems really low for how much it was talked up.
EDIT: Never mind, it isn't even the development I thought it was. Wow, this is a horrifically run city, no wonder there are no jobs in Arizona...
