Famous People Who Played Hockey
Thought I might start a thread about famous people who play hockey. Perhaps folks that you might not expect.
Anyone who gets the hockey news knows John Kerry plays fairly regularly.
But how about Pope John Paul II?
Quote:
In the winter, the future pontiff played ice hockey on the Skawa's frozen surface and went skiing.

Quote:
The Canadian youths gave the Pope a hockey stick with his name, John Paul, inscribed on the back. And his number: 2, in Roman numerals, of course. It was Roger's idea.
"Because I love hockey," he explained, gently shrugging his shoulders.
The Pope surprised them by confiding, "60 years ago, I too played hockey!"

Quote:
At the end of a youth rally at Kiel Center, where the St. Louis Blues hockey team played, a teenager handed the pope a sports jersey with "John Paul II" emblazoned across the back. Flashing a sly smile, the pope replied, slowly and in his thick Polish accent, "I am prepared to return to play hockey." Then, walking off the stage, he turned his walking cane into a hockey stick and sent an imaginary puck into the corner.

So, anybody else got any famous hockey players the rest of us might not know about?

I have a hockey card of Mr. Rogers as a Pittsburg Penguin. He was made honorary Captian in 1993.
http://www.misterrogers.org/mister_r...orhood/faq.asp
Which sports team made Fred Rogers an honorary captain?
In 1993, the National Hockey League celebrated its 75th anniversary by asking its teams to choose "celebrity captains." The Pittsburgh Penguins named Fred Rogers, and he ice skated into the arena to thunderous applause when he received his award -- and a Pittsburgh Penguin sweater.

Hey, how about Belarussian president Alexander Lukashenko, currently on the news daily because he's on the verge of being forcibly removed from power after apparently rigging elections. Seems to me I've seen footage of him playing hockey on a couple occasions, most recently when he played in a charity game alongside Khabibulin during the Stanley Cup's brief visit to Belarus.

Forgot about that one...
From a Playboy interview:
Quote:
PLAYBOY: Is it true that you're a longtime amateur hockey player?
CARELL: Yeah. A few years back I joined a men's league in Burbank. We're the Sharks. We're very bad, but we have a good time with it. What I lack in physical ability I make up for in poor coordination. Surprisingly, for an amateur hockey league, people get hurt all the time. It's a combination of the pure lack of skill and all those sharp skates and sticks. It's a bunch of middle-aged guys of varying degrees of being out of shape trying to recapture their youth. It's a recipe for disaster. I've chipped my two front teeth and dislocated and broken and strained and pulled all sorts of things. And that's playing just once a week. You can pack a lot of pain into a one-hour hockey game.

Macgyver, of course. If he had played hockey the records of Gretzky and Roy would have been shattered.
