More then likely, that amount is from drug money. The chances of it being from a legitimate source is extremely unlikely. I hate to say it, but I would probably keep it. Although l would then have to watch my back for the next while as the person who lost it is probably hunting it down and will do anything to get it back. High risk/high reward situation.

If I find it and there's ID I try to get it back to them.

If there's no id, I'm taking it to the police and letting them deal with it.

I'm assuming that it wasn't a 10,000 bill, so the police can verify who it belongs to by the breakdown.

Also they can see if the person that claims it is of interest.

I'm a nerd so I'd probably just put $10,000 on my mortgage. And then take out the family (wife, kids, brothers, dad) to a dinner with the remaining $400.

Phew. Thought I was the only crazy one thinking this.

I'd probably keep it and monitor the news.

Just curious... would dropping $10,000 in cash onto your mortgage raise a red flag anywhere? Could you reasonably argue you saved that much up and stuffed it in your mattress?

I'd guess that the money is dirty or that the other person (hopefully a charity) could better use it more than I ever could. At least that's what I'd tell myself as I return it.

Yea, this is CP here, 90% of this forum couldn't be bothered to bend over to pickup 10 gr.

That said, I think the only point in which an eyebrow might be raised at 10k of money appearing from nowhere is an audit.

I believe the law (at least in BC) is that if I turn it into the police and no one claims the money within 90 days, it's mine.

I agree, if I found it just laying on the street that money is mine.

If I found it in a purse I would get in contact with the person and return it.

My sister forgot her purse at McDonalds a few years ago, she was out with the kids and forgot to grab it as they were running around all crazy. She had close to 300 bucks in there, her camera, various other items. The purse itself was probably worth more than the contents. Anyway, they went back like 15 minutes later after she realized she didn't have it, and it was gone. They went over the video and the woman who she had been sitting next to, with her two kids, watched her leave the purse, craned her neck to look over to see if it was sitting there. Went over, very, very quickly scooped it up into her jacket and grabbed her kids and literally dragged them out of the place before they were even done eating.

Scum. Bag.

Last spring my GF was at the park with her running group doing their daily circuit, when they returned she found her window smashed in and her purse was gone. Her own fault, should have put in the trunk. Anyway, someone was walking by a dumpster and it must have been partly hanging over the edge because they saw it, it was a nice name brand (can't remember if it was Gucci, Prada or what) purse so obviously the idiot that stole it didn't realize the purse was worth much more than the 20 dollars cash and three year old digital camera inside, they also took her glasses. Anyway, the person who found it walked it down the five blocks to the cop shop and turned it in for her. She got back all of her ID and her actual purse which she was bummed about the most. So that was nice of them.

Last Christmas I went to a Christmas Sweater party at a friends, his brother has some shady characters that he hangs out with and my wallet went missing, again why did I leave it in my jacket. Anyway, someone found it outside of the bar downtown and again walked it down to the cop shop for me and turned it in. I was grateful because I got my ID and all that good stuff back, plus the actual wallet which I liked.

So in these three instances you have 3 dead beats and 2 nice people. Morale of the story is, dead beats out weigh the nice guys in life.

I'd take the money directly to Slava with instructions to invest and double it, then I'd return the found money and keep the profits. Win-win!

If Champion found it, he'd definitely give such a small amount back, 'cause $10K is only like a week's pay for him, right?

Being cash the bank would have to notify FDIC (?) by filling out a form. However, if you put $9,999 no form would need to be filled out. Although they could put a note on your file as a 'suspicious' deposit.

Apparently someone here hasn't taken the newest AML course yet!

Just as a tip, while we're on the topic of losing wallets, etc, is that you should photocopy all of your ID and keep it at home. That way if this ever happens to you, you at least have a copy of stuff to begin with.

I like to think I would return it, but in all honestly I don't know. I reckon once my wife caught wind she would return it.

Putting 10k on your mortgage wouldn't raise a red flag. Walking into a bank with 10k+ in crisp hundreds would. If you deposited 10k into your bank account over a few months and then put it on your mortgage, no red flags would be raised. Your biggest risk would be explaining where the money came from to the CRA if you ever got audited.

All that being said, I would return the money. All the comments about proceeds of crime and what not are simplistic justifications. If it's not mine, it's not mine. Stealing from criminals just lowers you to their level. Besides, it could just as easily belong to an elderly immigrant who doesn't trust banks.
