Thrashers Pitch shutout in Game 1, Win 2-0!

The Thrashers Powerplay was in top form today as both goals scored were with the man advantage. Patrick Lalime held the fort as he has all year and the top defence in the league limited the Sabres to 20 shots en route to a 2-0 win in Atlanta.

The first period was a close checking affair with both Giguere and Lalime playing solid hockey in a chippy hard fought opening period. The Sabres came out hoping to intimidate the Thrashers but instead played into the Birds from Georgia's beak.

Giguere stops first period shot

In the 2nd period the Thrashers capitalized on a Roughing Minor to Mike Leclerc, who somehow got off IR for the game, and Darryl Sydor scored the opening goal and the game winning goal at 4:38 of the period.

Leclerc pulls down Big Viktor Kozlov

The 3rd saw the teams settle down and play solid playoff hockey. At 17:13 Cory Sarich took another untimely penalty and a minute and 8 seconds later Marty St Louis put the game away with his first of the playoffs.

Marty pulls away from Sabres back checker

Goalie Statistics J-S Giguere (SAB), 30 saves out of 32 shots, L, 0-1-0
Patrick Lalime (THR), 20 saves out of 20 shots, W, 1-0-0

Power Play Conversions
SABRES 0 for 2
THRASHERS 2 for 8

Game Stars
1 - Patrick Lalime (THR)
2 - J-S Giguere (SAB)
3 - Darryl Sydor (THR)

Game 2 of the series continues in Atlanta on Friday night.

Very evenly played game...

Potvin plays well, but bottom line he was outdueled by Nabby!!

Power Play needs to wake up, and we need a true #1 goalie healthy!

Senators first line dominates Game 1.

Joe Thornton scores 3 Goals. Ryan Smyth gets 3 assists. The 3rd person in that group Nylander had a Goal and Assists.

The Senators Dominated this game with 37 shots to 20.

Good first game by the Senators. Turco did not need to stand on his head but was there when he was called upon.

The Senators of course Dominated the 3 stars. Thornton first star, Smyth 2nd star and Pronger the games 3rd Star.

NABOKOV THE STAR IN 3-2 WIN OVER PENGUINS

Evgeni Nabokov was the star of the show as his Florida Panthers won game one of thier best of 7 series against the Penguins.

The Penguins came out hard and quieted the crowd with a quick goal at 3:36 of the 1st period. The Panthers then scored two unanswered goals in the remaining 7:00 of the first period to take a 2-1 lead heading into the first intermission.

The Panthers then took a 3-1 when Craig "The Clutch" Adams scored coming off the bench. he only managed to get 5 minutes of icetime but he performs like a true warrior when called upon.

The Penguins got a late goal from Mike Ribiero but at that time it was too late. nabby shut the door the rest of the way.

Felix Potvin played a great game and kept it close the whole way through. If it wasn't for the great goaltending of Nabokov, the Penguins could have easily won this game. The Panthers PK unit also put together a great game today shutting down the Penguins on 4 opportunities.

The "Monter Mash" line was very quiet tongiht but so was the big line of the Penguins. It will be interesting to see what players decide to step it up next game when they play again on Friday night.

Game Notes:
Michal Handzus returned to action only to see his spot on the 2nd line gone. He played the third line and showed his effectivness by scoring a goal and going +1. He was also a huge factor on the PK.

Goalie Statistics Felix Potvin (PEN), 27 saves out of 30 shots, L, 0-1-0
Evgeni Nabokov (PAN), 32 saves out of 34 shots, W, 1-0-0

Power Play Conversions
PENGUINS 0 for 4
PANTHERS 0 for 2

Game Stars
1 - Evgeni Nabokov (PAN)
2 - Rob Blake (PAN)
3 - Pavel Kubina (PEN)
