Default Snow Route Parking Bans -- BAN Starting 9:00am Wednesday December 4th, 2013

Now that Remembrance Day ceremonies are complete, the City has enacted the first Snow Route Parking Ban of the 2012-13 season...

Quote:
Snow Event declaration - Snow Route parking bans in effect

A city-wide Snow Event has now been declared. Snow Route parking bans are currently in effect for the next 72 hours or until The City announces they have been lifted.

During a Snow Event, vehicles are banned from parking on any street that has been designated as a Snow Route.Vehicles that remain parked on these roads during the ban are subject to enforcement, up to and including a parking tag and tow. Snow Routes include major roadways, collector roads and most bus routes and are marked by blue signs with a white snowflake icon. A map and full list of Snow Route locations is available on www.calgary.ca/snow.

The City would like to thank Calgarians for their patience and cooperation. Snow Route parking bans help The City clear snow from major traffic routes more effectively and enable crews to get to residential routes faster. This will benefit all Calgarians and will help make travel safer for everyone this winter.

For more information, visit www.calgary.ca/snow or call 311. Please do not reply to this email as this address is not monitored.
I live on a snow route, and it looks like the plows have done a good job, so I don't think this ban will last very long.

-----

EDIT: The parking ban has been lifted as of 6:00pm on Saturday, January 12, 2013.

Thank you for the kudos. I went to plow Marda Loop today and no one moved their car, despite 2 days worth of notice. It makes my job way easier and less time consuming when people follow the bans. Short term pain for long term gain.

So was there actually any enforcement being done? You'd think with all the advance notice it should have been easy to do.

Not on my street they didn't, what a waste of time this ban is. I move my vehicle and some loser parks in front of my house anyway.

Many people had either Friday or Monday off and are away for the weekend.

No wonder everyone is confused about this. The bans are announced at weird times - supposed to last for 72 hours, then get lifted way before that.

What a terrible program.

Those people suck and I have no sympathy for them.

If I was in their shoes I would plan any time away as if a parking ban could occur while I was away and park my car in a safe area. Or have a neighbour/friend move my car.

But you know, all that actually implies taking responsibility, something we just don't like to do anymore. Let's blame silly hall instead!

If you live on a snow route and were leaving for the weekend and saw how much snow there was thursday and the reports on Thursday that there would likely be a snow event declared you deserve to get it towed.

In fact even if you live on a snow route you should make plans if you are away for any length of time, this is not something that is new. You live in Calgary we get snow in the winter, plan ahead or take the ticket or tow.

Doesn't it say up to 72 hours? They gave people well over 24 hours notice on this, closer to 48 as I am pretty sure I heard on the radio on Friday that it wouldn't be until Sunday when a snow event would be officially announced and mentioned it was due to an upgrade of the system. If it snows a lot we should be ready for a snow event.

I have edited the thread title to reflect the lifting of the ban. I'll try to keep the thread title up-to-date all winter to reflect the current status of any parking bans.

Otherwise, continue the discussion of the system. After last year, they said they were going to increase the size and frequency of the signage along the snow routes, but they have not yet done so (at least in Renfrew).

Last March I was in a pub in rural England with my folks, who live on a snow route back in Calgary. Got the notification via email, they called their neighbour, and their car was moved within minutes. And the neighbour was planning on moving it for them anyway.

This recent snow storm seems to have been very well handled. Deal with the storm response first, then call the ban so the bus routes and main roads can reclaim some of the parking areas, then call it off early so as not to unnecessarily inconvenience people. Plus a little bit of warm weather has helped, but the washer fluid is depleting quickly!

I live in Applewood. Moved the cars at noon on Sunday. Saw the plows out at 2:00pm on my way home today. Does it seriously take that long?

I live in Marda Loop and had no idea the ban was on. The plow covered my car when it went by, but whatever.

The City needs an app or something, or some way of notifying people via smartphone. I didn't even see it pop up on my Calgary Herald breaking news.

I got one yesterday at 1 when the ban started, and another this morning at 7:30 when it ended.

I would call that pretty quick. There are something like 14,000 lane km of roads in Calgary. Even with a small percentage being primary and secondary roads; that's a lot of road for plows to cover in 36 hours.
