KTrain, I just love the look on your son's face. Our blowouts so far were minor, just a wee bit out the back or side.

You may borrow the terms my wife and I coined if you like. Hopefully you won't have to use them as often as we did.
UTB = up the back
OTS = out the side

Go with the term I liked to use: "Its your turn."

Our issue was that we went through many brands before finding one that worked on ours... and of course now they aren't ideal for our second kid (urine everywhere, most of the time).
I don't mean to knock them, they just aren't my thing. When you have a kid you'll suddenly realize how important your free time is. Some won't mind doing an extra load of laundry every now and then, some won't be able to find the time and suddenly they'll have a giant bag of cloth with excrement all over it sitting in a corner.

The government is giving my wife a year long vacation to handle this baby stuff, so I assume it's always her turn, right?
So this blowout, is it due to pressure build up in the diaper? Or just a total shart explosion from the child that shatters anything in it's way?

ALL ABOARD!

The latter. There's usually no avoiding it. Liquid poo cannot be contained like pee.

I certainly tried to rig it that way, or make it so it was never my turn. I can't necessarily say it was successful, or advised, but I tried!

Here's another topic I need some advice on though. Diapers.
What's the best bang for the buck brand over the long term (I've heard that ideally you stick to one brand because of allergies?) Both in terms of price and quality. I assume Costco is the cheapest place to get them? I don't mind buying in bulk.
Anyone here use reusables? Any particular brands work better than others? I've read that a typical child goes through something like 3500 diapers in their childhood, and since disposables are not recyclable, that's kind of nuts. My goal is to have the kid trained by 1 year (I was 10 months, but that was under the iron fist of communism), but I'd like to reduce our waste as much as possible.
|
Good luck with that.

Perhaps he has sent "up" a mini toilet so the fetus has been able to practice for a few months...

Wow... potty trained by 1 year. Not that it isn't possible, but be sure to keep your expectations in check as that goal is a little on the lofty side.
As for the blowouts, I've found a big factor is how they're sitting at the time. Jolly Jumpers and neglect-a-saucers are the best at both entertaining youth, and diverting crap straight up a back.

I prefer to call neglect-a-saucers "mobile command centres".

It's not a hard and fast goal by any means, but it seems doable and not as crazy uncommon as some think (potty training starts much earlier in many parts of the world compared to North America). I was trained by 10 months, my brother at 12. Talking to my mom and aunt, it seems like its mostly a case of repetition and consistency. As soon as I would wake up, they would place me on the potty, and after a while I guess my brain made the connection.
We'll see how it goes....definitely not a tragedy if it doesnt happen by then, but hey, let's see what happens. Obviously, there are going to be accidents here and there, but that's expected.

Breast milk poo (or I guess goo) doesn't stink so much at least, right?

True, it gets stinkier once you start introducing food.

It depends. They all have ghey names like Apple Cheeks, Fuzzy Buns, Bum Genius, etc.. The one with the best name is Flip.
Also, you rinse them off before you put them in the laundry.

Have you looked up "elimination communication"? Have a Google or look up Mayim Bialek's parenting methods and you'll get a good idea of what's involved. I know it makes sense in some situations, but honestly? Not for me, at least the full-on 24 hour version. It sort of ends up being the parent who is "potty trained" and there's a lot of lost sleep. I'm more a fan of diapers and waiting until the child's body signals and communication ability and will are all aligned so they can do it themselves. But if you try it, more power to you.
/unsolicited advice.

I'd rather take on a second job to pay for disposables than use cloth diapers.

We had one daycare lady who's kid was allergic to whatever powder was in diapers so pretty much, the kid ran around with no diapers for a year and which resulted in being potty trained by age 1.
