Without a doubt, public schools are better because they don't waste an hour a day teaching fairytales. I'd way rather my kid be learning art, exercise or more of the three R's in a public school than whiling away five hours a week learning hogwash.

Don't know what it is like out West but around here girls who go to a Catholic High School almost always end up turning out to be the biggest sluts.

Man I really hate when our youth is taught about morals and spirituality and right and wrong since so many parents out there choose not to
Like others have said high school religion really isn't about brainwashing kids to join the catholic church it is teaching religions around the world. Would you rather your kid take a half spare and smoke pot in the parking lot or stuck in a class room expanding their knowledge.

Then dont send your kid to a Catholic school and move along.
Some people want to despite not being Catholics. I think thats strange.

That's what I do in real life. On a discussion forum, when somebody asks the members where they think a child will get a better education, I gave my opinion.

Having not attended a Catholic school I'm not going to say much about this clearly delusional stance you have. However, I will say its pretty sad when someone who clearly knows nothing about the separate school board has such a hard line opinion of what they do such as yourself.
The public board is certainly not making up the difference with increased learning time or more paintbrushes for little Jimmy.

Yeah, I tend to be direct on forums at the expense of an appropriate amount of decorum. Should probably work on that a bit.

My understanding is religion is taught for one hour per day in the separate school system. That same hour in the public system is used for teaching things that I think are more important. How is that sad lol?

Even if the in-existence of god is proven beyond any and absolute doubt the reason religion should be taught is much like history, it has had a vital part of shaping our world and lives.
-So like social sciences, humanities and literary arts religious studies is a field on its own. Every university offers a BA, MA and Phd in Religious studies.

Yeah, I know. I have a religious studies minor from UC.
My problem is the Catholic system doesn't fairly teach kids about the nature and history of all religions as there is always the Catholic bias. They are teaching Catholicism because that's their mandate.

A good friend of mine teaches sex-ed in a Catholic junior high. Perhaps it's different from teacher to teacher or school to school, but I disagreed strongly with how she was told to run the class (for the record, so did she). When it came time for the question box, some questions (such as "what's the proper way to put on a condom?") were given a canned response of "according to the Catholic church, the only way to fully protect from unwanted pregnancy or disease is abstinence".
No parent should be relying on the school system to fully educate their kids about sexuality, but that is something I'd keep in the back of my mind.

Relying on the school system to teach your children is like relying on them to feed them.
The education children receive at school is supplemental to the education they receive at home.

Learning "religion" is a lot like learning "literature". You read, you think about it, you try to figure out meaning and context, and you write essays. It's like taking another English class. Even if the bible is mostly fiction, it doesn't mean that there isn't academic value in it. I mean, I read The Odyssey and wrote an essay on it in public school. Is that anymore useful (or useless)?
It comes down to the teachers. I had some teachers in religion class that were very liberal and appreciated dissenting opinions or alternative interpretations, then I had some that weren't. Just like in public school, I had some teachers that disagreed with my interpretation of stories and others embraced it.
I honestly felt that when I left for public school, I was ahead of the class. In grade 11 at public school, they were still reading books that we read in grade 9 and 10 in Catholic school.

This.
Especially when it comes to morals and ethics. If children can't think for themselves, the problem isn't with the type of school they go to. It's with the parents.
School in the West has pretty much just turned into a place to plop your kids while you go to work.

I don't expect my school to feed my kids, but I sure as hell expect them to teach them things. That's their whole purpose for existing.
While parents have a huge role to play in educating their kids about life, school is pretty vital. Most parents aren't qualified to teach anyone about everything (or for some, anything), which is why we send them to school. They have people who specialize in different areas, and can ideally give our children a well rounded education. Or at least that's the plan.
God help the child who has to rely on me to teach them math.

Well, math is a wonderful thing because it has right and wrong answers. Religion, not so much.

I completley agree with you, and we are so lucky in Calgary to have one of the best educational systems and that too at the public level.
