Default Racist or not? Or just racially insensitive?

http://sports.nationalpost.com/2012/...loween-taboos/

Quote:
Toronto Maple Leafs forward Tyler Bozak appears to have joined what is now becoming an annual tradition of prominent public figures making questionable wardrobe choices at Halloween. Raffi Torres was ahead of him in line, doing something similar last year.

Barrington Walker, associate professor in the department of history at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ont., teaches courses on race, immigration, African Canadian history and legal history. He was asked about Bozak’s costume — intended as a tribute to late singer Michael Jackson — on Wednesday.

“Was it knowingly racist? No,” he said. “But does it have consequences with regard to racial insensitivity? I would say yes.”

Not racist or racially insensitive. If Michael Jackson can dress up as a white woman for a good chunk of his career, then a white dude can dress up as a black Michael Jackson for Halloween!

While not racist, some people appear to take Halloween too serious:

http://www.torontosun.com/2012/10/25...ually-impaired

Quote:
A Canadian society for the blind is outraged by a U.S. company for selling Halloween costumes locally that allow people to dress up as a “blind referee,” in reference to bad sports officiating.
Carolyn Gunn, president of the Alliance for Equality of Blind Canadians’ Nanaimo, B.C., chapter, said she found the costume at the Spirit Halloween costume shop recently and confronted the manager.
“It came with sunglasses, a foldable-collapsible tapping stick and a referee shirt. I couldn’t believe it. I was completely devastated,” she said Wednesday.

Clearly he missed the Raffi Torres CP Thread last year

Not racist, just ignorant to something racially sensitive he didn't know about

I don't consider dressing up as a famouse person (black/white/yellow/brown) racially insensitve.

Dress up as a generic black gentleman eating waffles and chicken, then there is an issue.

Not racist. He is dressing up as a person for Halloween, a person who happens to be African American.

As the post above mentioned if he dressed up as a generic black stereotype then there would be some issues, but to dress up as a celebrity should not be an issue.

Nothing to see here.

If there is any undeserved racial sensitivity its coming from the people who are offended by this. Its Halloween, its done in good fun. Everyone grab a drink and relax.

Its not like hes marching in a hate parade or anything.

Good grief!

Dressing up as a celebrity is a common thing to do. It would be more racist to exclude certain celebrities because of their racial background.

That's what I thought at first too, but he tweeted a defense of Torres last year, so he knew what he was doing.

"Is it a good idea to go to a Halloween party dressed in blackface if you’re a white hockey player?"

"Blackface"??

Anyways, why don't people say "hey he is dressing up as Michael Jackson maybe because he liked him as a performer?
People always find the negatives.

This #### is getting out of control.

"I'd really like to have dressed up as MLK, but that would be racist." WTF?

Honest question, why is it racially sensitive?

He dressed up as Michael Jackson, a famous singer. He was not mocking, he was not projecting him an a derogatory way.

So am I not allowed to dress up as an alien because I am a human? Just because he is white means he cannot be a black man? Was it racially sensitive when Eddie Murphy dressed up as a white man? No, it was hilarious.

As the wife of a Pastafarian I know it hurts him greatly at this time of year to see people dress up as pirates and mock his beliefs.
