Not many people care about Hockey in Oklahoma

This is at a grand opening of Dick's Sporting Goods in Oklahoma City.
Justin( Im leading the AHL points but Captain Obvious says it doesnt count cause its just been 7 games) Schultz and RNH . Man can you imagine what would it would be like if this was Edmonton ? Or Calgary if Sven and Jankowski were to go somewhere and sign. Not OKC though... nope only 5 or 6 people.

Was hoping to come down to see the baby Flames this year. Sucks that they aren't there until the last two games of the season.
How are the Barons marketed there? OKC used to be fairly hockey crazed when the Blazers were active.

The Barons are horribly marketed... They are trying some gimmick of giving away 12 cars.... not a chance to win one but literally giving away a car almost every Saturday. Still we are only averaging about 3000 fans. The deal is they don't cater to anyone. I suggested selling colleges cheap ticket packs and having college night. Their answer is NO! If we do that it cheapens the product on the ice and that's why the Blazers went under.

The Blazers went under because Bob Funk wanted an AHL team IMO. Yeah the last few years there werent many fans. I remember selling out the arena when I was younger. I didnt like Hockey but I loved fights and people loved coin beer. When the Blazers won the CHL that arena was rockin for a few years afterwards.

As I said I have tried to help and give suggestions. It never helps, Im not saying I know a lot about hockey and promotion but I am saying I know more about hockey than most people in Oklahoma ( or Barons fans) and apparently more about promotion than the Barons .... for example at the Equipment Sale I was talking to someone who did or does head up the Season Ticket Holder's committee ( or at least said he did) and he was talking about how much he knew and yada yada yada.. When it came down to it , he had no clue who Alexander Ovechekin is. " Oh I have heard the name , does he play for Philly?" WTF ?

Without reading the thread, if I were to simply look at that picture I would assume the two kids at the table worked at the sporting goods store and were trying to get people to either apply for a job or sign up for some kind of loyalty program.

It doesn't "count" because it is a meaningless thing not because Captain Obvious says so.

16-38 bucks + 2 bucks if you buy them the day of the game. The cheapest ticket last year was 10 bucks. You could buy the cheapest and move to any place that wasnt on the glass last season. Now I think they are stopping that bc the season ticket holders were bitching bc they paid full price blah blah blah.. all 1300 STH.

When you are in a city with a basketball team that has a player like Kevin Durant then people aren't really going to care much for the AHL team.

Uhhhh the only reason we would go see Landry Jones is to booooooo him much like hockey fans Boooooooo Bettman when they see him.
Landry Sucks and I wish he would have left last year. Nonetheless Landry Jones brings me to another good point. The Thunder shouldnt stop people from coming to hockey games. The Chesapeake Arena seats prob the same as the Saddledome. 20-25k. We get 90k people to Norman on Saturdays for football games. I dont see why we cant get 25k to the Thunder and 5-7k people to the Barons. They don't even compete with each other on homes games much this year (ie home games on the same night) . I think if the Lockout goes on all year and The Oilers/Barons can make it to the Finals I think we could get some people to come to the games.

I never said anything about it "not counting".
I said likening what Schultz has done in five AHL games to what was expected of a supposed No. 1 NHL defensman over the course of full NHL seasons was a flawed and terrible comparison.

 Because it was.

Saying “Hey, Justin Schultz has looked awesome” would have sufficed. Trying to insinuate he’s looked (at an AHL level that is of no useful sample size) like what we hoped Jay Bouwmeester would have looked like for us at a pro level is asinine.

I really don’t understand why people are prone to ridiculous overstatements on the internet, and in turn, why they’re so upset when they get called on it.

That conversation should have been a very short one in the other thread with you simply agreeing it was a poor comparison / choice of words.

The fact it’s still being discussed it really puzzling.

^ You're the one who brought it up again in a different thread, and in the process mis-quoted and misconstrued the very simple point I made so I reiterated in my post above to clear up any confusion for you.
Maybe you can get away with making ridiculous over-statements in Oklahoma where they don't know any better, but around these parts a spade gets called a spade and that was a ridiculous thing to say. |
