You do need to clarify. Are you talkin' for a drunken romp or for the real deal?
I'm 40. I'd feel like a sleezeball if I had sex with any woman under about 25. For a long-term relationship I would like to say that age doesn't matter but I would be looking above 30 for sure.

Depends on the person. I generally would go 8 years below my age and about a year above. But it's certainly not a hard-and-fast rule.
The age 'rule' means a lot less as you get older.

She should be at least 3 years older. That way she is mature enough to make a man of you, and you both die at the same time.

Everyone is different... I've met a lot of stupid people my age. And a lot of dumb 30+ year olds too.
Personally, the last 2-3 years were big years of learning/growing up and finding out what the real world was like. Not pretending I know everything, but most people with a 'teen' hanging off their age have no idea at all. I sure didn't.
I'm not saying I want the super mature, perfect, intelligent and wise woman... I just want someone on the same level that I am. I found her too, and am extremely happy

I don't think anyone implied that 23 is the pinnacle of maturity, but there's a vast difference between 18 and 23.

I've got a buddy who is 52 and has a 29 year old girlfriend - she's pregnant now. Dude will be dead before his kid graduates.

I've never understood this line of thinking. So what?

When you get old and want to spend a quiet time at home, she wants to go out and dance.

So his retirement will be spent with a sullen teenager around the house.

Thats right, and that teenager had better like changing adult diapers. Its a great retirement plan really, he wont have to go into a retirement home because hes got two young people to take care of him.

An 18 year old is in high school. A 23 year old is likely just out of university, so yes would (should) be much smarter. There is a huge difference between the two. The 23 year old likely (but not always) has lived outside her parent's home, is starting a career and has a few years of life experience and handling their liquor.
There may not be a lot of difference between 45 and 40, but there is between 23 and 18, just as there is a huge difference between an 18 year old person and a 13 year old.

She probably has either a father complex, or is marrying him for his money. Athough I must admit, I have seen it work out OK, where a woman marries a man twice her age.

My uncle is 61 and his last long-term girlfriend was 28 and a professional ballet dancer. They got along awesome and were really good together. They are still very good friends but the relationship ultimately ended as she wanted kids badly and he was (obviously) not into it at that age.
It works for some.

My girlfriend's sister just did that as well. Its not ideal because there will be a lot of situations where the woman is going to have to have to shoulder more burden due to the age of her husband, but thats just part of the deal.

Plus the potential inheritance complications, when he dies and she gets remarried.

Okay, yes. In the situation that I'm familiar with it would be relevant as the husband now technically has two families with two different women and if he were to die it would be conceivable that his current wife could re-marry.
But at the same time, I dont know if inheritance implications is something they took into account when they got married. That just seems kind of cold.
Anyways, the whole thing is convoluted and really calls into question a few boiler-plate assumptions about family and marriage.

I think in the case of significant age difference, it is reasonable and prudent to have a prenuptial agreement.

I have a feeling the age rule would get thrown out the window if the person looked like a supermodel.
